May 29, 2013

A customer walked into the bookstore yesterday and paused after entering - then said, "There is nothing like walking into a bookstore. It smells like home." That is exactly how we feel. No algorithms can compete with the feeling of having a bookseller put a book in your hands and say, "You MUST read this!". Or, as frequently happens, another customer will do the same.
We love to recommend books and have selected the best books for you to feast on this summer.  Hot off the press is our Summer Reading Feast for 2013 available in the store now. So come on in and smell the books!

And speaking of feasting, our new event series Cooking the Books is a huge success! We welcome Joanne Chang on Tuesday, June 4th at 6:30pm, Barton Seaver for a Father's Day grilling demonstration on Saturday, June 15th at 4pm, and end the season of events with The Honey Connoisseurbeekeeper, author and visionary behind Red Bee ® Artisanal Honey, Marina Marchesa on Sunday, June 23rd at 2:00pm. Get a delicious introduction to the world of honey and taste some of the amazing new varieties with Marina Marchese as she presents her new book The Honey Connoisseur. Marchese will teach you everything you need to know about tasting, selecting and cooking with honey while also offering simple recipes for dressings, marinades, quick-and-easy desserts, and beverages. A perfect book for light summer entertaining!

Sarah Dessen No one combines romance, yearning, and empowerment like bestselling young adult, author Sarah Dessen. We are thrilled to be co-hosting Sarah on Wednesday, June 5th at 7:00pm at the Morse Institute Library in Natick for her newest book for teens: The Moon and More. Set once again in Colby, the beach town that has been central to so many of her books, The Moon and More tells the story of Emaline, a hometown girl on the cusp of college, who is struggling to balance where she comes from with where she's going. Sarah will discuss her new title, take questions from fans, and sign books.  For complete details, including signing line requirements, visit the event page on our website.

Help Wanted:
Love our store? Always had a dream to work in a bookstore? Check out the Job Opportunities page on our website for current openings.  For more information or to apply, please email Deb or fill out an application at the store.
For Father's Day, get Dad a ticket for one of our most popular new events - Bill's Book Group for Guys - a relaxed evening in the store discussing a great book accompanied by a beer, glass of wine, or a select single malt whisky.  $25 buys the book and a ticket to the event on Wednesday, September 18th at 7:00pm, including libations. The selection for September's meeting is The New Confessions, William Boyd's fun romp of a read and, perhaps, the definitive novel of the 20th century.  Follow protagonist John James Todd through the trenches of the First World War, to the beginnings of the silent film industry in Weimar Germany, and into a mediocre directing career battling the Hollywood blacklist during the Red Scare.  Boyd is deft at presenting the occasionally comic struggles of the ordinary man against the context of sweeping historical events, and this is his masterpiece.
"Oh, magic hour, when a child first knows it can read printed words!" --A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith

Recommendations from our booksellers...

The Flamethrowers The Flamethrowers
by Rachel Kushner
This powerhouse novel is set in the 1970s and revolves around an unlikely trifecta of the New York art scene, motorcycle racing, and the Red Brigade labor confrontations in Italy. The narrator, Reno, is an artist, obsessed with speed, who relocates from Nevada to New York. She falls in love with the disaffected heir of an Italian tire and motorcycle dynasty, sets a land speed record for women on the Bonneville Salt Flats, but crashes when she attempts to connect with members of the family empire. Entertaining and informative, this ambitious effort is garnering some impressive reviews from some industry heavyweights.
Golden Boy Golden Boy
by Abigail Tarttelin

Sixteen year-old Max is handsome, charming, athletic - and intersex.  Through a series of alternating narrators, the book explores the violent, tender and tragic effects this fact has on Max, his family and friends.  Most compelling - how does a parent begin to let a child make independent decision about his life?  And what if you fundamentally disagree?  An accomplished, thought-provoking  debut novel.
The Redeemer The Redeemer
by Jo
Nesbø
The brilliant, yet oh-so-flawed detective Harry Hole returns. A page-turner with jaw dropping twists and turns - and well, you'll never look at your vacuum cleaner the same way again.
Man Up! Man Up!
by Ross Mathews
Ross Mathews gained fame as Ross the Intern on Jay Leno's Tonight Show. His book is as appealing and honest as he is on T.V.

Dog of the Week

  • Daisy

Daisy Buchanan This happy girl has a very literary name - Daisy Buchanan. She is a 7 year-old Glen of Imaal Terrier -  a breed that originated in County Wicklow, Ireland. A very rare breed indeed!

She has a friendly, laid back personality. I kept asking her questions because no matter what I said, she tilted her head as if trying to figure it out. We had a great time and I look forward to seeing her on her next visit!
