Stay tuned! Soon to be in the store, our annual Summer Reading Recommendations booklet! We love to recommend books, and this is a great way for you to get our picks of the best books to read on your summer vacation. My favorite section is "Shorts to Read in Your Shorts" with a exceptional selection of short story collections.

Amy Brill Our own local bestselling author Nichole Bernier (and hostess extraordinaire!) will be hosting an event tonight at the store -- Wednesday, May 15th at 7:00pm -- with debut author Amy Brill for a reading and signing of her book The Movement of Stars. Inspired by the work of Maria Mitchell, the first professional female astronomer in America, The Movement of Stars is a richly drawn portrait of desire and ambition in the face of adversity.

Terry Walters Tomorrow, Thursday, May 16th at 6:30pm, celebrate spring produce with well-known holistic health counselor, food educator, and motivational speaker Terry Walters! She will demonstrate cooking techniques and early spring recipes from her cookbook, Clean Food, which Mario Batali calls "the most exciting book based on fresh produce and simple recipes I have used in years."

Young Writer's Panel

What do local writers Cal Armistead, Scott Blagden, Jack D. Ferraiolo, and Joe Lawlor all have in common? They've all written books for young readers and know that you can too! In honor of Children's Book Week, these four authors will be hosting a fun writers' panel on Saturday, May 18th at 4:00pm to share advice, stories, and the steps it takes to write your own book. Have a story that you're working on? If you're a writer in grades K - 12, bring in a single page of writing (double-spaced) with your name and contact information and one of our visiting writers will send you personalized feedback. This is a free event -- please RSVP to help us plan! Email kidevents@wellesleybooks.com to let us know if you can come.

Sarah Dessen No one combines romance, yearning, and empowerment like bestselling young adult, author Sarah Dessen. We are thrilled to be co-hosting Sarah on Wednesday, June 5th at 7:00pm at the Morse Institute Library in Natick for her newest book for teens, The Moon and More. Set once again in Colby, the beach town that has been central to so many of her books, The Moon and More tells the story of Emaline a hometown girl on the cusp of college, who is struggling to balance where she comes from with where she's going. Sarah will discuss her new title, take questions from fans, and sign books.  For complete details, including signing line requirements, visit the event page on our website.

Recommendations from our booksellers...

The Golem and the Jinni The Golem and the Jinni
by Helene Wecker
In The Golem and the Jinni, Helene Wecker has created an enchanting fairy tale of a novel grounded in turn-of-the-century Manhattan. Chava is a golem -- a woman made of clay -- brought to life in Poland. Ahmad is a jinni, imprisoned in his copper flask in the Syrian desert, and released in New York, yet still not entirely free. Part historical fiction, part fantastic tale, you will get lost in this delightful debut.
The Golden Egg The Golden Egg
by Donna Leon

The latest in Donna Leon's Venetian mysteries featuring the wily Commissario Guido Brunetti. As always, Venice with its charms, corruption and character, is front and center. And the mystery is a good one also!
Coral Glynn Coral Glynn
by Peter Cameron

You might think you know what will happen when nurse Coral Glynn arrives at the home of Major Hart in 1950 England. But while Cameron brings the two lonely people together in a kind of romance, he adds layers of unsettling details and events at every turn. Hard to put down.

The Other Typist The Other Typist
by Suzanne Rindell
Rose is a typist in a New York City police precinct during Prohibition. Her life is changed by her obsession with the mysterious, glamorous Odalie - the "other typist". A little Hitchcock, a little Gatsby makes this a fun read.

The School for Good and Evil The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
Recommended by Gina, Age 12
A great book that deals with good and evil, changing your fate, and the true power of friendship.  Best friends- and polar opposites- Sophie and Agatha are kidnapped and sent to the School for Good and Evil to live their own fairy tales. When prissy Sophie ends up in Evil and creepy Agatha is sent to Good, things get complicated. The girls must work together to get home, while dealing with a very handsome prince, awful uniforms, and some very shocking twists that will change everything. Richly written and filled with comedy (and some tragedy), this book is one that will leave you breathless.

Lawless Lawless by Jeffrey Salane
Recommended by Henry, Age 10
Lawless is a good book. It is cool because normally you hear about superheroes being trained but this was the complete opposite. It is a supervillain  who is being trained. This book is an adventure book but it is also a tiny bit of a mystery. It definitely would be a great action/adventure movie.

My Summer of Pink & Green My Summer of Pink & Green by Lisa Greenwald
Recommended by Eleanor, Age 12
This book is a great sequel to the book My Life In Pink & Green, and is still about Lucy and her eco-spa. Her family has just started work on the new spa and hires a Spa Consultant to come and help out. Gramma's friend, Gary has also come down to bring his granddaughter Belvin.  Lucy's sister Claudia comes back for the summer along with her new boyfriend "Bean" . With all these new grown-ups coming to help, Lucy is left out of helping build the spa and is stuck hanging with Belvin. What she thought would be her best summer is soon turned upside down. This great book was very fun to read and all the challenges Lucy faced are not too far off from the ones many teenagers face.

This could be your review!
We are looking for Summer ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) Reviewers between the ages of 8 and 17.  If you are interested, you will get the opportunity to read books before they are published and possibly get your reviews published in our store's newsletter or on our social media sites.  Print out and fill in the attached enrollment form and return to either Lisa or Margaret at the store.  The program runs from May 26, 2013 - September 15, 2013.

Dog of the Week

  • Izzy Friendly

Izzy Friendly This smiling sweetheart is Izzy Friendly,  a 3 year-old mini Goldendoodle. Izzy really liked Margaret and wanted to join her behind the cash register -- or is it that she wanted to stay close to the bag of treats? I think maybe it's a bit of both. She certainly lives up to her name!
