May 1, 2013

Have we ever been happier to see the month of May? If there were a Maypole handy, I would be dancing around it. This is also the month to celebrate Moms, and we have done our best to put together a collection of thoughtful books and unique gifts for you. We have books of poetry, beautiful cards, a journal to capture Mom's thoughts -- and if you need suggestions, please ask us. Giving suggestions is what we love the most about our jobs.

The Other Colors We all know our red, white, and blues but have you ever thought of the other wonderful colors that never get mentioned in kindergarten? Tonight, Wednesday, May 1st at 7:00pm, wear your favorite "other" colors and come crunch colorful culinary cuisine with Valerie Gates. First time author and local designer, Valerie's gorgeous book, The Other Colors: An ABC Book, is full of beautiful photography and witty alliterative descriptions.

Selena Coppock On Thursday, May 2nd at 7:00pm, join us for an evening you won't want to miss. If laughter is the best medicine, then you will be healed by the humor and wit of Selena Coppock. Selena is a standup comedian, writer, and storyteller based in New York City. Her storytelling abilities have been showcased throughout New York and Boston. Selena will be reading from and signing her debut book, The New Rules for Blondes , a collection of essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype.

Francona Award-winning Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy will be here signing his must-read book, Francona, on Saturday, May 4th from 2:00-3:00pm.
Terry Francona's time as manager for the Red Sox was an unforgettable, endlessly entertaining, and instructive time in baseball history. It is documented and celebrated in Francona, a book that examines like no other the art of managing in today's game.

Patti Moreno Ready to get your hands dirty? Garden Girl Patti Moreno will be here on Sunday, May 5th at 2:00pm. Moreno, host of the most popular garden videos on the web, has devised a unique plan for creating low-maintenance organic "cuisine gardens" that produce the vegetables, fruits, and herbs people love to eat.

Elinor Lipman On Wednesday, May 8th at 7:00pm, join us at the Weston Public Library for a fun evening with author Elinor Lipman. Her new book, The View from Penthouse B, is a story about two sisters recovering from widowhood, divorce, and Bernie Madoff find themselves unexpected roommates in a Manhattan apartment.

Bill Kohli Bill's Book Group for Guys is going to Australia! Join him on Tuesday, May 21st at 7:00 pm for a discussion of Cooper's Creek by Alan Moorehead, accompanied by a glass of Mclaren Vale Shiraz, a can of Foster's, or a select single malt whisky. One of the greatest adventure stories of all time, Cooper's Creek recounts the celebrated 1860 expedition of explorers Burke and Wills who set out to traverse the vast Australian continent from top to bottom in search of a "Great Inland Sea." Tickets to this event are available in the store or on our website.

Recommendations from our booksellers...

The River of No Return The River of No Return
by Bee Ridgeway
The River of No Return is hands-down one of my favorite books this year. Just as aristocrat Nick Falcott is about to be killed on a Napoleonic battlefield - he jumps in time to modern-day London. Thus begins an engrossing adventure, with mystery, romance, humor, and impeccible historical detail. Be prepared, because once you pick this book up, you won't be able to put it down!
A Tale for the Time Being A Tale for the Time Being
by Ruth Ozecki

A woman finds a plastic bag containing a diary, composition book, watch and letters washed up on the shore of British Columbia. Every other chapter is an entry from the diary of a Japanese girl raised in California but back in Japan and the woman's reaction to it. How did it arrive - did she toss it like a bottle or was it the tsunami? Just one of the questions in this exquisitely crafted novel. I "enjoyed" it in spite of the sensitive nature of the events depicted.
Someday, Someday, Maybe Someday, Someday, Maybe
by Lauren Graham

A thoroughly enjoyable debut novel from the actress Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood fame. The story of a young actress coming up on her personal deadline of making it in NY acting world is both funny and entertaining.

The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards
by Kristopher Jansma
This extraordinary first novel tells the story of a young man who wants to become a writer. The story unfolds like a kaleidoscope and each chapter brings another time, place, and point of view. I loved it!

Dog of the Week

  • Miles

Miles The oh-so-cute Miles is a 4 year-old small Poodle/Golden Retriever mix. He loves cats, and because he loves people, he is a terrible watchdog. It looks to me from this picture that Miles has a hard time keeping still! He looks ready to just jump on over and give you a hug.
