March 20, 2013

Where is spring? We sprang ahead and yet there is still more snow. We even had a snow dog tied up in front of the store yesterday! The good news is, we have plenty of events planned to get you out and about in the company of other book lovers and authors.

Eve LaPlante Tonight, Wednesday, March 20th at 7pm, join us at the Weston Public Library for an evening with Eve LaPlante, author of Marmee and Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and her Mother. Award-winning biographer Eve LaPlante, a great-niece and a first cousin to Abigail and Louisa May Alcott, draws from a trove of surprising new documents to show that it was Louisa's actual "Marmee," Abigail May Alcott, who formed the intellectual and emotional center of her world. It is sure to be a great discussion for lovers of Little Women and Louisa May Alcott.

Scott Nash Ahoy there young artists! Illustrator and author Scott Nash will be here at Wellesley Books on Thursday, March 21st at 4pm for a drawing demonstration and book signing. Known for his sense of humor and vibrant style, Scott has illustrated more than 40 children's  books including the Flat Stanley series and his new novel, The High Skies Adventure of Blue Jay the Pirate.

Jacqueline Davies On Saturday, March 23rd at 3:30pm, gear up for National Poetry Month with best-selling local author Jacqueline Davies as she shares her latest book in the Lemonade War series, The Candy Smash. Jessie and Evan are at it again: Jessie looks for the scoop on class crushes while Evan discovers he likes to write poetry. Who is sending their classmates mysterious candy heart messages? Find out when Davies comes to Wellesley Books to talk poetry, sign books, and answer your questions.

Congratulations!
Betty Congrats to Betty for the 50th meeting of her Lunchtime Book Group yesterday where they discussed A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash. The miserable weather didn't keep anyone away - it was a full group! Our next Lunchtime Book Group is on Tuesday, April 23rd where Betty will be leading a discussion of The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng. Nice job, Betty!

Recommendations from our booksellers...

Abide With Me Abide With Me
by Sabin Willett
Abide With Me starts with the passionate teenage romance between Emma Herrick, the girl who lives on the "right" side of town, and Roy Murphy, the boy from the trailer park. They are separated when Roy enlists in the army at 18. Six years later, Roy Murphy returns from Afghanistan still burning with love for Emma. Sabin Willet is one of those talented writers who make it possible for one to step into another's shoes. The scenes that take place in Afghanistan, told from the viewpoint of those serving their country, are eye-opening and provide a rare opportunity to understand the young soldiers that are in situations that are so far from our reality.
How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia
by Mohsin
Hamid
This is another gem from the author of The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
How someone can tell the life story of an unnamed man in an unnamed Asian country with grace, humor and pathos and do it in the form of a self help book is nothing short of miraculous. I read it in awe and then I wept. Highly recommended.

A Land More Kind Than Home A Land More Kind Than Home
by Wiley Cash
Brutality and healing live side by side in rural North Carolina. Wiley Cash's debut novel explores religion, passions and brotherhood in a way that compels the reader to see it all. Does the church heal?  Are sons like their fathers?   Are children innocent?  This is an amazing story. Wiley Cash's characters will make you cry, and this novel will echo in your heart for a long time.
Tenth of December Tenth of December
by George Saunders

These laugh-out-loud funny stories are mostly set in a disquieting future that isn't so different from our present.  Pretty much any adjectives you can think of to describe these stories sound po-faced ("surreal," "deadpan," etc.) so I'll just say that his writing is sort of your-brain-but-smarter.  Saunders also has a real knack for satirical brand names.

Not Your Typical Dragon Not Your Typical Dragon
by Dan Bar-el, illustrated by Tim Bowers
What is Crispin Blaze to do?  He is a dragon who cannot breathe fire.  He can breathe whipped cream, marshmallows and even beach balls but that is not what a dragon does.  An encounter with the knight, Sir George, and a family emergency help him to see his unique value.  Funny, witty and sweet, this story is a perfect bedtime read!

Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made
by Stephan Pastis

Timmy Failure is the founder, president and CEO of what he believes is the best detective agency in the nation, Total Failure, Inc. Although his assessment of his business might not be accurate, he does have a lot of heart. He wants to succeed in order to help out his Mom. Add in his business partner, Total, a fifteen-hundred-pound polar bear, the Failuremobile aka a Segway, and the girl never to be talked about, and you have one hilarious story.  Fans of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid will thoroughly enjoy.

Prisoner B-3087 Prisoner B-3087
by Alan Gratz

"We are alive, and that is all that matters.  We cannot let them tear us from the pages of the world." says Yanek Gruener speaking to another prisoner.   Yanek is determined to survive so that he may remember the stories of those he lost.  From Nazi controlled Poland, through ten different concentration camps, salt mines and death marches, this compelling story amazes as it shows the strength of the human spirit in the most horrific of circumstances.  Although a work of historical fiction, it is based on the real life experiences of Jack Gruener.  A story that must be read and remembered lest we forget.

Out of Nowhere Out of Nowhere
by Maria Padian

Somali refugees, a small town in Maine, and high school soccer make for a thought provoking novel that raises questions about the modern immigrant experience and the impact on small towns. Tom Bouchard is heading into senior year and although he appears to have it all together - great grades, a star soccer player, friends and a girlfriend - he actually isn?t sure what he will do after graduation.  When he meets Saeed, one of the Somali refuges who have relocated to his town, his world starts to change and he begins to realize what is important.

Dogs of the Week

  • Penny & Splash

Penny & Splash Hal is one of our regular customers who comes in with his best pal, Splash, a Chocolate Lab. Hal recently told me that Splash had a fancy new little sister. Well, I had to see this. He promised to bring her in so I could meet her in person. She is adorable, wearing the cutest of pink doggie sweaters. Splash is still mainly interested in getting his treat (he is a Lab, after all). Penny is a 4 month-old Cavachon and sure is lucky to have such an awesome big brother. I doubt she will be coming in with Hal and Splash on their rambles, though. (It's a guy thing!)
