New Year, new books to recommend!

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
This is the book J.K. Rowling says was her favorite book when she was an adolescent. Once you read it you'll know why she loved it so.

Married Love and Other Stories by Tessa Hadley
This is a lovely collection of stories where ordinary people are doing ordinary things. Yet, Hadley's skillful writing show these contemporary family relationships in fine focus. She does a beautiful job of character description.

Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson
"Alif" is a young computer-hacker living in an unnamed Arab city in the present day. After unleashing a particularly brilliant piece of programming prompted by a particularly nasty break-up with his secret girlfriend, he finds himself fleeing through the City with State agents at his heels. When the underworld heavy, whom he asks for protection turns out to be something more-than-human, the story takes a turn for the mystical. Wilson seamlessly intertwines cutting-edge digital technology, ancient Islamic storytelling and contemporary political struggles into a tightly-paced, high-action tale. A story about belief, information, and power, Alif the Unseen is full of dazzling moments of intersection between a past long forgotten and a future about to emerge.

Midwinter Blood by Mons Kallentoft
The perfect Swedish mystery for this frigid weather! In one of the coldest winters in Sweden, a naked obese man is found hanging from a tree. Is it suicide or murder? Police superintendent Malin Fors and her partner Zeke are assigned to the case. Malin is a 34 year-old single mother - flawed, but very likeable. She struggles with the case, along with being a good mother to her teenage daughter. I love Scandinavian murder mysteries and this is a fabulous new author in the genre. Lucky for us, it's the first in a series.

- New releases that are reader tested...
The Critter Club: Amy and the Missing Puppy by Callie Barkley recommended by Rachel, age 8
I like this book because there is always action so you won't get bored reading it. Amy has a craving for Nancy Drew books and she loves animals. When Ms. Sullivan loses her puppy she goes to Amy's mom, the town veterinarian, for help. When Amy hears about the puppy, it is Amy's opportunity to solve a mystery. Will Amy and her friends find the dog? If you are 6 to 8 years old and like animals, you will like this book.
Nancy Clancy, Secret Admirer Jane O'Connor (perfect for Valentine's Day! Recommended by Phoebe, age 8
I really liked this book because whenever you finish a chapter you don't know what is going to happen next and you are excited to find out. This book is about Nancy and her best friend Bree who are trying to make two people fall in love. One of these people is Nancy's guitar teacher. The other one is Bree's babysitter. I recommend this book to 8-10 year olds.
Splintered by A. G. Howard Recommended by Olivia, age 14 This book grabs you and pulls you in, thrills you with mystery and betrayal, and leaves you breathless with the vivid, mystifying world that AG Howard has created. Alyssa Gardner is descended from the Alice that inspired Lewis Carroll, and she can hear bugs and flowers talk- as can her mother, who, because of this is in a mental hospital. When Alyssa tries to find out if wonderland is real, she discovers it is- but it is far more sinister and dark than Lewis Carroll ever thought. In order to fix her mother's illness, she must pass a number of impossible tasks while trying to decide who she loves- the mysterious and dark creature from her past, or her loyal, brave, long-time crush. Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes Recommended by Timothy, age 13 Falling Kingdoms is a superb work of fantasy! I liked how every character's seemingly different lives and situations were slowly pulled together as the Kingdoms did worse. I also enjoyed the high level of detail throughout the book, making it much easier to view the story in the way the author wanted - slowly derailing and foreboding to even worse things. I would recommend this story to readers of fantasy without huge amounts of unrealistic things; more realistic, but with touches of fantasy.

What are the chances we would have two adorable puppies named Finn as dog of the week? This week's Finn is a West Highland Terrier puppy. His family is very excited to see him as Dog of the Week! He looks pretty happy too - can you see the blur where his tail is wagging? What a sweetie!
