We want to wish all of you a very Happy New Year and extend our sincere thanks for another successful year. We appreciate your support and love the conversations we have with our customers each day. During the holiday season especially, we see friends greeting friends and exchanging hugs in the aisles or at the register -- some of our customers even bring us cookies! What better place to work than in a bookstore? We couldn't do it without you.
We are looking forward to an exciting, busy 2013 starting off our events season with not one, but TWO Newbery award-winning authors! Jerry Spinelli and Clare Vanderpool will be at the Needham Public Library tomorrow, Thursday, January 10th at 7pm. Join these talented authors for a conversation on the magic and adventure of writing for young readers in a unique author panel. The authors will be taking questions from the audience and signing books after their presentation. Please note: While this event is free and open to the public, to enter the signing line, attendees must have purchased a copy of Hokey Pokey by Jerry Spinelli or Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool from Wellesley Books.
Attention young aspiring authors! On Tuesday, January 22nd at 4:00pm, be transported to the streets of Paris and discuss writing over hot chocolate and pastries with Gayle Forman, young adult author of the New York Times bestseller If I Stay. Gayle will be hosting a conversation and booksigning with fans at Wellesley Books in honor of her new book for teens, Just One Day, and will also be judging a contest for young writers (ages 14 - 20). For more information including how to enter the contest, check our website or email Allison at: kidevents@wellesleybooks.com.

Telegraph Avenue by Michael Chabon
Lifelong friends Nat and Archie are struggling to keep their co-owned record store afloat on Telegraph Avenue. When a local superstar and former NFL quarterback announces plans to build a megastore across the street, their business seems doomed. The two must fight for their livelihood, and their families, while dealing with issues of race, class, and personal integrity. A humorous but moving read for lovers of music and pop culture.

The Death of Bees by Lisa O'Donnell
"Today is Christmas Eve. Today is my birthday. Today I am fifteen. Today I buried my parents in the backyard. Neither of them were beloved." I was hooked by the first paragraph! Marnie and her little sister Nelly are now on their own. Both girls decide to keep that fact to themselves until Marnie is sixteen and can legally care for them both. Told alternately by Marnie, Nelly and their neighbor, Lennie, this story is both enchanting and funny at the same time. You will come to care for the quirky characters, and root for some kind of happy ending for the sisters.

The Rook by Daniel O'Malley
I was sold on this book when I read the tagline "Welcome to Her Majesty's supernatural secret service." Myfanwy Thomas wakes up in a park with no memory, surrounded by dead bodies. Fortunately, through a series of notes she's left for herself, she's able to piece together her life before the amnesia -- and the hilarious, complicated, and dangerous bureaucracy of the supernatural MI6, The Chequy. She finds she not only has to battle mind-controlling fungus and deal with creepy (and possibly undead) co-workers, but also solve the mystery of who wiped her memory and wanted her dead. Reminiscent of Jasper Fforde, this book is a ton of fun.

Hell-Bent by Benjamin Lorr
Hell-Bent is a fast-paced and comprehensive exploration of the origins and background of competitive yoga in America. The author is an out-of-shape, overweight, twenty-something when he stumbles into a yoga class and then quickly onto a fast-track personal journey of transformation, self discovery, and extreme physical obsession. If you've had any exposure to yoga at all, you'll find many moments that make you laugh out loud or wince in painful recollection. Otherwise sit back and simply enjoy this surprisingly well written firsthand account of a bizarre subculture of American life. Hell-Bent is every bit as entertaining as Word Freak or Moonwalking with Einstein.

- New Releases from Local Authors
Starry River of the Sky by Grace Lin
In this companion to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, featuring the same timeless storytelling and beautiful art, young Rendi works as an innkeeper in the Village of Clear Sky when the moon goes missing - among many strange phenomena that affect the village. When a guest at the inn unspools some magical stories, though, the pieces of the puzzle begin to fit together. Also look for Dumpling Days, which is new in paperback - Pacy (of Year of the Dog) travels to Taiwan for her grandmother's 60th birthday.
The Candy Smash by Jacqueline Davies
Jessie and Evan Treski of The Lemonade War fame return for some Valentine's Day sleuthing. Jessie looks for whomever might have left some mysterious candy in students' desks while writing an ill-advised article on class crushes for her own newspaper. Laugh-out-loud funny, but don't peek ahead!
The Upside of Ordinary by Susan Lubner Eleven-year old Jermaine dreams of reality TV fame but soon finds that her family life lacks enough drama to interest an audience. Her solution to this problem involves elaborate staging that rarely goes according to plan. This funny tale of one ordinary family rings true to middle-school experience.

This completely photogenic puppy is named Finn. He came in the store to say hello for the first time and charmed us all. He was 10 weeks-old when we took this picture in November, and he is a cavapoo - half king cavalier spaniel, half poodle. What a cute combination! He looks to be about the right size to fit in the Puppyhood book - he is certainly cute enough and it would be so fun to see his litter-mates!
