It should be no surprise to see the correlation between the above maps and this one, which shows in red, the federally controlled lands. Our forests used to be managed in ways that preserved a healthy density of trees. They used to be tended like gardens, with the fruit harvested to fun our schools and communities, while at the same time, preserving beautiful, healthy forests for the use of...well...the public. Now, we can't touch a single tree on federal lands. And rather than the healthy 40-60 trees per acre, they often exceed hundreds, even thousands per acre, fighting for limited water, becoming vulnerable to beetle infestation. As these policies kill our forests, they become tinderboxes waiting for Al-Qaida or Mother Nature to clear-cut them by fire. |
