LIGHTS OUT Northern Michigan! Residents, businesses and visitors, join us in turning off the lights throughout the North tonight August 12th from 10:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Emmet County is asking you to help make the sky as dark as possible for an incredible night of stargazing and meteor-watching. We are hosting the Lights Out Across the Bay and Lights Out Across the Straits challenges, rain or not. Here's how it works: Between the hour of 10-11 p.m., please turn off your lights inside and out. Then sit back under the stars and enjoy the Perseid Meteor Shower, which peaks overnight at this time. Petoskey Youth Baseball Association is hosting its final Sunset Showdown of the 2016 season this weekend August 12th - 14th. Forty-six teams from all over the state will be participating with players ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old. Baseball games will be played on Ed White Field (at the waterfront), River Road Sports Complex, and Bates Fields on the campus of NCMC. The 2016 "Healing the Bear" Bear River Cleanup will take place along the Bear River in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties on Saturday, August 13th from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. beginning at the Bear River Shelter in Petoskey. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to walk, wade, or canoe as they pick trash and debris from the area surrounding the Bear River. Canoe volunteers are especially needed this year! Pre-registration by August 3rd is appreciated. All pre-registered volunteers will receive a free light breakfast, an event t-shirt, and a free lunch. Local Author Fair on Monday, August 15th from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Carnegie Building. Nearly 30 local authors will gather for Petoskey District Library's first annual Local Author Fair. The event will feature new talent and popular, local favorites who either live in or write about the area. A selection of titles will be available for sale. Kickoff for the event will be a keynote address at 3:00 p.m. by author Dennis Cawthorne. Free and open to the public. Complimentary ice cream provided by Murdick's. 4th Annual Summer Super Swirl at Crooked Tree Arts Center is Wednesday, August 17th. Mingle within the three summer exhibitions, while enjoying fine wines, Michigan craft beers, savory appetizers, and sweet treats. During this sprawling event, attendees will be able to watch live art demonstrations and live performances by local musicians. The event covers all of the Arts Center's square footage, think of New Year's Eve, but in the summer. The Summer Super Swirl's capacity maxes out at 600, and this event is for those 21 years and up. Annual Howl at the Moon to take place August 18th! Join Little Traverse Bay Humane Society for their Annual Howl at the Moon fundraiser on Thursday, August 18 from 6-9 p.m. at Nub's Nob. McLaren Northern Michigan and the National Ski Patrol at Boyne Highlands are partnering to host free community Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training on Friday, August 19th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey. The community CPR training will take place in the McLaren Northern Michigan Cafeteria, located through the Main Entrance Lobby and up one floor to the Main Level. Coffee @ Ten with Darrell Lawson: A Michigan Big Year. On Tuesday, August 23rd, join CTAC-Petoskey for a Coffee @ Ten lecture with Petoskey Audubon President, Darrell Lawson.
