AAA Petoskey Wins statewide award for customer service! The Petoskey AAA office was honored with the award of highest performing sales office in the state for customer service. When asked via phone survey if they would recommend AAA to a friend or relative, 100% of those surveyed in the second quarter of 2016 said they would.  They are the recipients of a travelling trophy which they display proudly in front. The AAA Petoskey Office is made up of Member representative Laura Reece, and insurance agents Andrew Davidson and Brian Tonge.

Herpetology Surveying Techniques will take place on Saturday, August 6th from 10:00 a.m. - Noon at the Braun South Nature Preserve, south of Pellston. Little Traverse Conservancy's summer stewardship assistant Graham Peters is conducting his college senior project on herps. Board nomination for Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce. At the PRCC Board of Directors Meeting in July, the board established the Nominating Committee
of Tom Adams, Lisa Lemans, Margaret Bowers, Mary-Anne Ponti, Bill Marshall, Jim Bartlett, and Derik Mott-Bragg.  This committee will consider nominations for the PRCC Board of Directors for terms beginning in 2017.  All candidates must be active members in good standing with the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce.  To nominate yourself, or another individual, send an email to Carlin Smith at carlin@petoskeychamber.com and share the nominee's qualifications for board service.  Please use the word, "Nomination" in the subject line of the email.  Nominations must be received by 10:00 a.m. on Wed. Individuals in the beginning stages of starting a business, in need of accessing capital, or simply considering self-employment, will have the opportunity to attend a Starting a Business workshop Thursday, August 11 in Petoskey.
The workshop is being offered by the Northwest Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in partnership with North Central Michigan College, and is being held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Room 536 of the North Central Student and Community Resource Center, 1515 Howard Street.  Emmet County is asking you to help make the sky as dark as possible for an incredible night of stargazing and meteor-watching. We are hosting the Lights Out Across the Bay and Lights Out Across the Straits challenges. Here's how it works: Between the hour of 10-11 p.m., please turn off your lights inside and out. The 2016 "Healing the Bear" Bear River Cleanup will take place along the Bear River in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties on Saturday,
August 13th from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. beginning at the Bear River Shelter in Petoskey.  Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to walk, wade, or canoe as they pick trash and debris from the area surrounding the Bear River. Canoe volunteers are especially needed this year! Pre-registration by August 3rd is appreciated. All pre-registered volunteers will receive a free light breakfast, an event t-shirt, and a free lunch. The 25th Annual Odawa Homecoming Jiingtamok (pow wow) is Aug 13th - 14th at the LTBB Pow Wow grounds in Harbor Springs.
Admission to this cultural event is free and open to the general public. Singing and dancing are a big part of the festivities, and don't miss the drum contest and Miss Odawa Contest. Grand entry times are 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and 12 (noon) on Sunday.

Annual Howl at the Moon to take place August 18th! McLaren Northern Michigan and the National Ski Patrol at Boyne Highlands are partnering to host free community Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training on Friday, August 19th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey. The community CPR training will take place in the McLaren Northern Michigan Cafeteria, located through the Main Entrance Lobby and up one floor to the Main Level. Participants will receive complimentary educational materials. Community members are encouraged to attend to receive basic knowledge and hands-on training. Raven Hill hosts "NASA in Your Neighborhood" on Saturday, Aug. 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
NASA Glenn outreach staff will be on site to present NASA themes. Space enthusiasts of all ages can take part in 'make-it, take-it activities', and demonstration carts will be available. Nash, Senior Vice President and Director of the McNair Center at Northwood for the sixth annual Northwood University Policy Forum, "Freedom, Strength and the Future of the U.S. and Global Economies." This free, public event is Saturday, August 20th at 11 a.m., at the Bay Harbor Yacht Club, 4300 Vista Drive. West and Nash will present on the state of the Michigan, U.S. and global economies while evaluating the historical values that have made the U.S. the most successful economy in recorded history. Coffee @ Ten with Darrell Lawson: A Michigan Big Year. On Tuesday, August 23rd,
join CTAC-Petoskey for a Coffee @ Ten lecture with Petoskey Audubon President, Darrell Lawson. Lawson spent 2014 attempting to see as many bird species in the state of Michigan as he could. Come hear him talk about the experience, birds seen, birds missed, and reflections after the fact. Photos, videos, maps, and of course, the final list, will be displayed as well. 9th Annual Microbrew & Music Festival is right around the corner, kicking off Friday, August 26th! Two days of craft brews, good food, and local and national star-studded acts, all happening in the downtown Traverse City's Commons to give a proper farewell to our beautiful Northern Michigan summer. Sounds like fun, right? We are looking for folks to pour beers, sell tickets, and be site managers of brew zones. Call for Artists for "Chalk the Walk" in Petoskey during Festival on the Bay. This year CTAC and Top of Michigan Trails Council are changing things up a bit. 20 artists age 16 and up will be selected to create chalk art pieces, and each invited artist will receive a $100 stipend. The deadline to apply through www.CallForEntry.org is August 15. Artists under the age of 16 are welcome to register on-site. Each junior division artist will receive a box of chalk, and three honorable mention $50 prizes will be awarded. All registered chalk artists are eligible to win the $500 People's Choice Award. This simulation is an experience that is designed to help participants understand what it's like to live month to month on a limited income. The goal is to help people rethink what it is to struggle financially and sensitize participants to the issues far too many local families face. By participating in this Simulation Workshop you can walk a mile in the shoes of 38% of the households in our communities. Participants will act as a family and face the everyday struggles that low income families face.
