Today, Tue. Aug. 2, is Election Day. If you haven't done so already, please make sure you vote. Polls will remain open until 8 p.m. in your traditional voting locales. The primary election this year is very important in Emmet County. Locally, six of seven Emmet County Commissioner slots are contested. There are also some key ballot issues, some of which include a public safety equipment millage in the City of Petoskey, Library Millage renewals in Resort and Bear Creek Townships, fire protection millage renewal in Bear Creek Township, and a county wide tax limitation proposal. Voters today are also deciding their party's nominee for U.S. Congress in the first district. On the Republican side, the contenders are Jason Allen, Tom Casperson, and Jack Bergman. On the Democratic ticket are Jerry Cannon and Lon Johnson. One contested state race pits incumbent Lee Chatfield and challenger Kathy Twardy in the 107th state house race on the Republican ticket.
Remember, in the primary election, you must vote a straight-party ticket, all Republican or all Democrat, you can't go back and forth. It is worth noting that all Emmet County Commission races are on the Republican Ticket.
