| Primary Election One Week Away |
|
The Tue. Aug. 2 Primary Election will have critical implications in our region. There are contested County Commission Races in six of the seven districts in Emmet County. In most cases, the candidate chosen in the primary will be uncontested in the November General Election. Voters here will also be selecting Republican Candidates for the First U.S. Congressional District. Former Senator Jason Allen, Retired Lt. Gen. Jack Bergman, and Senator Tom Casperson are competing in that race on the GOP ticket. The winner will take on either Gen. Jerry Cannon or Lon Johnson on the Democratic side. In the 107th State House Race, incumbent Representative Lee Chatfield is facing competition from Kathy Twardy of Sault Ste. Marie. Phil Bellfy is running unopposed on the Democratic ticket.
The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance has compiled candidate responses for a virtual, on-line candidate's forum. This forum features state and federal races from throughout northern Michigan. Please do all that you can to be an informed voter on August 2nd. You can access the virtual forum here: https://nmichiganbusiness.com/2016/07/14/2016-virtual-candidate-forum/

The SkyWest employees were guests of the Air Service Task Force, a multi-chamber committee that advocates on behalf of our regional airport. The Familiarization Tour featured stops in Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Mackinac Island, and Bay Harbor. The task force extends its appreciation to Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry, the Grand Hotel, Chris Shepler, Stafford's Hospitality, Diane Dakins, the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau, Daniel DeWindt, Carlin Smith, ASTF Chairman Jim Kan, airport manager Kelley Atkins, and Mackinaw Shuttle for their assistance and contributions to the tour. SkyWest provides regional air service for several major airlines including Delta. This summer, they are providing flights to and from Detroit and Minneapolis.
