Northwest Michigan Works! has a new Director of Operations. Terry Vandercook is taking on the leadership position at the organization which operates centers in Cadillac, Kalkaska, Manistee, Petoskey, and Traverse City.
Prior to accepting the position at Northwest Michigan Works!, Vandercook served as a Business Development Manager for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. He also worked previously as a Northwest Michigan Works! Business Liaison. Prior to that Vandercook had a 20-year career in the United States Air Force.
Vandercook replaces former Northwest Michigan Works! Chief Operating Officer, Janie McNabb, who served the agency for 18 years in various roles. McNabb resigned to spend more time with her family. "I'm thrilled to transition this position to Terry," said McNabb. "His experience and natural leadership qualities are a perfect fit."

Laughter workshop: Public invited to join area theatre directors to study the "Sweet Science of Comedy". Professor Bill Irwin of the University of Michigan-Flint Department of Theatre and Dance is slated to conduct a hands-on workshop, August 1 and 2, from 9 am to 4 pm at the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center. Skills taught in the workshop can be used effectively by not only theatre directors, but also by English and music teachers. A total of 30 volunteers are needed to help run a poverty simulation. Volunteers will represent police, school personnel, pawn shop owner, utility company, and social service organization. They will be stationed at a table representing a service during four 15 minute "weeks". Some volunteer roles are not stationed at a table; they will be walking around during this role play. All directions will be shared with you and there are very easy instructions. We also need some volunteers for set up and take down. To be eligible for the awards, the recipient(s) must be individuals and organizations dedicated to the preservation, presentation and promotion of the history and culture of Emmet County. Charlevoix Country Club to Rebuild! Owner Fred Taylor plans to rebuild as soon as possible, making improvements to the Clubhouse in the process. The goal is for the new Pro Shop and Restaurant space to be ready by Memorial weekend 2017 with Event space to follow. Meanwhile, the many businesses of the Club are carrying on! The Argonne Supper Club is back up and running in their former location on Boyne City Road. Heatherwoods Golf Course continues its busiest season ever. Charlevoix Fitness is running as usual. Shanahan's Barn Event and Wedding season continues uninterrupted.The Country Club is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of sympathy and communitywide support received during this trying time.
Charlevoix and Emmet County Emergency Food and Shelter Grants Available. Emmet County has been awarded $21,934 in Federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, the Charlevoix County award has not yet been announced but we anticipate it being reduced from last year's level of $17,981 by approximately 22%. These funds will be distributed by a Local Board and are used to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in these counties through March 31, 2017.
