The Maple River Ramble is Saturday, April 16th from 10:00 a.m. - Noon at the Philip C. Braun Nature Preserve in Pellston.
To date, Little Traverse Conservancy has protected 1.5 miles of the Maple River, Emmet County's premier trout stream and an important tributary of the Cheboygan River Watershed. Former Conservancy staffer, trout stream enthusiast, and all-around "ramble-rouser" Doug Fuller will lead an exploration along the banks and bluffs of the West Branch of the Maple throughout the 127-acre Braun Preserve. Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Sunday Series features Brass, Percussion and Woodwinds at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17th

The Chamber Orchestra's Brass and Percussion Ensemble consists of Vern Campbell and Pat Jarve on trumpet, Beverly Isenbarger on horn, Edward Bahr on trombone, Carl Hawkins on tuba and Robert Bellairs on percussion.  Their concert program consists of five selections including compositions by Samuel Scheidt, Dan Van Vactor, Paul Hindemith, Wilke Renwick and Louis Moreau Gottschalk. North Central Michigan College will present a free international lecture, "From Convulsion to Caliphate: The Creation and Challenge of ISIS" on Thursday, April 21st at 1 p.m. in the Library Conference Center. Where did ISIS come from and what can the United States do to limit its impact? Dianna Stampfler of Promote Michigan presents: Postcards to Michigan's Past on Monday, April 25th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Petoskey District Library. Before email and text messages, postcards were the premier way to send a quick message to family and friends. Fortunately, these cards have been preserved and saved from generation to generation - offering a glimpse into a simpler time of carefree vacations around the Great Lakes State. Dianna's collection, at more than 100 to date, spans from Michigan's coast to coast and from one season to the next.

Camp Daggett will raffle off a Venture Isley 14 kayak as a fundraiser for its Adventure Center on April 26
. The Outfitter of Harbor Springs donated the kayak, valued at $1,300, as part of the Kayak for a Cause on Walloon Lake, coming July 16-17, 2016.  Proceeds from the raffle will support programs and scholarships for school students at the Camp Daggett Adventure Center. Raffle tickets are 1 for $10 or 3 for $25. There are a total of 400 tickets for sale. 'The Mighty Mac: An Icon in Michigan' is the next Essence of Emmet program on April 27th,
from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Community Building at the Emmet County Fairgrounds in Petoskey. The story of one of Michigan's most recognized and beloved landmarks, will be the topic of the Essence of Emmet historical collaborative's Spring 2016 program. This is a free public event. On this evening, several speakers will offer insights and background on the Mighty Mac, and the public may have the opportunity to hear from several people who worked on the bridge's construction, during a Q & A session. The Last Good Country: Walloon Lake, An Ernest Hemingway Occasion presented by Hotel Walloon. Friday, April 29th
, 2016 starts this three-day event featuring meet-n-greet with Valerie Hemingway, who was Ernest's personal assistant and daughter-in-law, John Cohassey, a Hemingway author and Chris Struble, President of Michigan Hemingway Society. Saturday includes tours of Horton Bay and Walloon Lake that will visit Hemingway's favorite haunts. Youth Mental Health First Aid Course offered during May is Mental Health Month
.  Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainings specific to youth will be offered to community members, co-sponsored by the Health Department of Northwest Michigan and North Country Community Mental Health (NCCMH). The two trainings are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 2nd, and Wednesday, May 25th, with a one-hour lunch break from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Both trainings will take place at the Health Department's Emmet County office located at 3434 M-119 in Harbor Springs and are at no cost. Citizen Scientists Wanted for Stream Monitoring Program. Free training Saturday, May 14th

The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council is looking for help from volunteers in the community that are interested in learning about water quality and gaining hands-on experience through monitoring rivers and creeks in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Cheboygan counties. The 2015 ArtPrize People's Choice Award winner, "Northwood Awakening" by Ann and Steve Loveless is now on display at CTAC-Petoskey.
Steve, a landscape photographer, and Ann, a textile artist, are a husband and wife artistic duo from Frankfort, Michigan. Together they melded photography and quilting into their trademarked PhotoFiber composition which showcases a quintessential northern Michigan flora scene. The Loveless' piece is open for viewing from now until Saturday, May 14 in Crooked Tree Arts Center's Bonfield Gallery. Beginning on Saturday, April 16, the award-winning creation will be surrounded by area youth artwork as part of CTAC's Annual Youth Art Show. The American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to donate blood this spring to ensure a sufficient supply for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country.
Donated blood is perishable and must constantly be replenished to keep up with hospital patient need.
