With Michigan's Severe Weather Awareness Week April 10th-16th, 9&10 News/ Fox 32 are calling upon community members to take action to prepare by participating in a statewide tornado drill at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13th. Businesses, organizations, families and individuals are encouraged to be a part of the voluntary statewide preparedness activity. Severe Weather Awareness Week is sponsored by the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (MCSWA) to educate the public about the danger of tornadoes and other severe weather events, including the precautions that can be taken to save lives and protect families. Join the Headlands in celebrating the statewide Astronomy Night (SWAN) on April 15th! Just as the constellation Cygnus, the swan, begins to make its seasonal return to northern night skies, stargazers statewide will gather to celebrate SWAN (Statewide Astronomy Night) on Friday, April 15. North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture will present a presidential election preview on Friday, April 15th. The luncheon will be in the Iron Horse Café (cafeteria). Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Sunday Series features Brass, Percussion and Woodwinds at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17th, at The First Presbyterian Church in Boyne City. The Chamber Orchestra's Brass and Percussion Ensemble consists of Vern Campbell and Pat Jarve on trumpet, Beverly Isenbarger on horn, Edward Bahr on trombone, Carl Hawkins on tuba and Robert Bellairs on percussion. Their concert program consists of five selections including compositions by Samuel Scheidt, Dan Van Vactor, Paul Hindemith, Wilke Renwick and Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Camp Daggett will raffle off a Venture Isley 14 kayak as a fundraiser for its Adventure Center on April 26. The Outfitter of Harbor Springs donated the kayak, valued at $1,300, as part of the Kayak for a Cause on Walloon Lake, coming July 16-17, 2016. Proceeds from the raffle will support programs and scholarships for school students at the Camp Daggett Adventure Center. Raffle tickets are 1 for $10 or 3 for $25. 'The Mighty Mac: An Icon in Michigan' is the next Essence of Emmet program on April 27th, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Community Building at the Emmet County Fairgrounds in Petoskey. The story of one of Michigan's most recognized and beloved landmarks, will be the topic of the Essence of Emmet historical collaborative's Spring 2016 program. This is a free public event. The Last Good Country: Walloon Lake, An Ernest Hemingway Occasion presented by Hotel Walloon. Friday, April 29th, 2016 starts this three-day event featuring meet-n-greet with Valerie Hemingway, who was Ernest's personal assistant and daughter-in-law, John Cohassey, a Hemingway author and Chris Struble, President of Michigan Hemingway Society. Celebrate National Library Week April 10th-16th. This week, the Petoskey District Library joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. Among other events, we will be continuing our popular National Library Week tradition of Food for Fines. If you bring the food, we waive the fines! All week when you donate non-perishable items the Library will waive your overdue fines. Fees incurred for lost or damaged items are not eligible. All proceeds benefit our local food pantries. The 2015 ArtPrize People's Choice Award winner, "Northwood Awakening" by Ann and Steve Loveless is now on display at CTAC-Petoskey. Steve, a landscape photographer, and Ann, a textile artist, are a husband and wife artistic duo from Frankfort, Michigan. Together they melded photography and quilting into their trademarked PhotoFiber composition which showcases a quintessential northern Michigan flora scene. The Loveless' piece is open for viewing from now until Saturday, May 14 in Crooked Tree Arts Center's Bonfield Gallery. Beginning on Saturday, April 16, the award-winning creation will be surrounded by area youth artwork as part of CTAC's Annual Youth Art Show.
