North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture will examine the highs and lows of El Niño and La Niña on Friday, February 26th
in the Library conference room. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. Why do changing water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean affect Northern Michigan weather?  Jim Keysor of the National Weather Service office in Gaylord will analyze El Niño cycles from a historical perspective and point out clues to our weather patterns in the months ahead. Winter Open House at the McCune Preserve on Saturday February 27th
from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Right in our backyard, this beautiful preserve on the Minnehaha Creek offers 3.8 miles of trails. Recently expanded, these trails showcase the creek, hardwoods, and hemlock forests on the preserve. Meet at the new parking area on Berger Rd. at 11:30 for a guided snowshoe hike or arrive any time to explore the groomed trails on your own. Cider, chili, hot cocoa and other treats will be provided after the guided hike to warm up. Registration is appreciated. Meet 'Galileo' and view the moons of Jupiter during the March 5th Headlands Dark Sky event!
Headlands is very pleased to announce special guest Mike Francis from Newton, Massachusetts, a unique science educator and actor who will step out of the pages of history to delight guests at Headlands as Galileo himself.
He will offer a program, "Galileo's Dream," from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Guest House at the Headlands, 15675 Headlands Road, Mackinaw City. The March 5 program is free and open to the public, no reservations required. It will take place rain, snow or shine and will include indoor and outdoor activities. Telescopes will be provided for views of Jupiter and its moons.

Congressman Dan Benishek will host a Veterans Assistance Fair at North Central Michigan College on Monday, March 7th
from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Iron Horse Café (cafeteria) on the Petoskey campus. Experts will be available to help veterans obtain access to information on benefits, disability claims, fee basis/choice card, eligibility for health care, employment and housing. Vietnam Vets will also receive 50th anniversary pins.  All area veterans and their families are welcome. Registration for the 2016 Northern Michigan Regional Home Show is open!
  This annual event features more than 100 display booths, is the official home show for the building industry in Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet and Otsego Counties and draws thousands of attendees from across the state of Michigan.  Any business that is involved in the building or housing industry is encouraged to participate.
This year's show will be on March 11th and 12th of 2016 and will again be hosted by North Central Michigan College in Petoskey.  Registration information can be found by visiting the Home Builders Association of Northern Michigan web site at www.HBAnorthernmichigan.org or by calling the HBA office at 231-348-9770.
