Northwestern Mutual has honored Mr. Stephen B. Selden, CLU, ChFC, Wealth Management Advisor with membership in its 2015 Forum Group, which recognizes individuals for an outstanding year of helping clients plan for and achieve financial security.  Selden, based in Petoskey, is affiliated with the Western Michigan Network Officein Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is the first time that Selden received the Forum honor. Forum honorees were recognized at a national leadership conference held in November. The annual Forum conference is an exclusive achievement, with approximately 5 percent of Northwestern Mutual's more than 6,000 financial representatives invited to attend. 
Scott A. Herceg Earns Certified Association Executive Credential
The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) has announced that Scott A. Herceg, Executive Officer of The Home Builders Association of Northern Michigan, which supports the building industry of Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet and Otsego counties, has earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation.  The CAE is the highest professional credential in the association industry.  Founded in 1960, the CAE Program stands as a mark of excellence and has evolved to reflect what it takes to manage an association in today's challenging climate.  A little more than 4,000 association professionals currently hold the CAE credential with 130 of those in the State of Michigan.  With this certification Herceg now is one of only two CAE's managing organizations north of Grand Rapids.
Bill Blakemore, an exemplary employee who recently retired from Walstrom Marine in Harbor Springs, Michigan after more than 50 years of service, has been inducted into the Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) Hall of Fame for year 2015. The presentation was made at the Recreational Boating Educational Conference (RBEC) held December 10, 2015 in Lansing, Michigan. David Lyle, president of Walstrom Marine, who nominated Blakemore for this honor, shared, "Customers came from all over the Midwest to Harbor Springs to have Bill work on their boats. He has been a meticulous and masterful artist with an eye for perfection."  MBIA is the official, statewide industry association which serves as the voice to Michigan's $7.4 billion marine industry and the 4 million people who enjoy Michigan's nearly 1 million registered boats. Walstrom Marine is a second-generation, family-owned yacht sales and service company celebrating over seventy years of serving the boating community throughout northern Michigan.

The Crooked Tree Youth Orchestra will celebrate its fifteenth season with the annual Winter Concert held on Sunday, January 31st
at 3:00 p.m. in the Crooked Tree Arts Center Theater. The music for this season highlights notable works written for movies. The Symphony Orchestra will perform selections from Godzilla, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. The Chamber Orchestra will perform music from Marvel's The Avengers, and "Everything Is Awesome" from The Lego Movie.  The Concert Orchestra will also be featured in the performance. Knee High Naturalist, Tracks in the Snow will take place at the Round Lake Nature Preserve on February 6th
from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Bring your 3 - 5 year old to explore animal tracks in winter. We'll discover which animals are active in winter and what their footprints look like. Char-Em United Way's third Toast to Literacy fundraising event, will be held February 6, 2016
from 7 to 10 p.m. at Castle Farms in Charlevoix. The event focuses on delightful libations from local breweries and vineyards as well as a delicious food competition by select caterers. Toast to Literacy features wine/beer/mead tastings, food, a silent auction, and live music. All proceeds benefit the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a literacy initiative sponsored by Char-Em United Way. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra extends an invitation for all to attend, a "Day for Strings" on Saturday, February 20th 
at Petoskey High School. This day includes a series of workshops for string musicians of all ages and abilities and will conclude with a side-by-side performance with members from the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra at 3:00 p.m. The cost for students to participate in this workshop is $12 for the day ($10 for any additional family members.)  Scholarships are available to assist with the expense of participating in the "Day for Strings."  Participants are asked to bring lunch and a music stand, if they have one. Pre-registration is requested and entry forms and music can be found at www.glcorchestra.org or by calling 231-487-0010.

North Central Michigan College's Lecture Series will present a lecture on community awareness in the face of active shooter events
with Dr. Mike Clumpner, a 25-year veteran of public safety and president and CEO of Threat Suppression, Inc., on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Dr. Clumpner will discuss civilian personal safety and how to prevent dangerous encounters using awareness and recognition. Admission is free, but tickets are required, for more information and ticket locations call 231-439-6225.

The YMCA of Northern Michigan's 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament is back!
This double elimination tournament is open to all children in grades 3 - 10, with both male and female brackets. The 2016 tournament will be held on Saturday, March 19th at Petoskey High School, beginning at 9:00am. As with all Y Programs, we will reinforce our core values: responsibility, honesty, caring, and respect through healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. Friendship Centers of Emmet County (FCEC) is participating in March for Meals, a national campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and support for Meals on Wheels during the month of March.
FCEC currently serves 185 homebound seniors in Emmet County with a hot, nutritional meal five days a week, as well as frozen meals for weekends and holidays. The demand for this service is increasing.
