Do you Belong? October is Chamber of Commerce Month! Watch all month long for testimonials from chamber members as to why they belong. October is Chamber of Commerce Month in Michigan and the chamber is using this month to feature the "I Belong" campaign and we invite all members to participate.
You can wear an "I Belong" button all month long to help show you belong to the chamber and help spread awareness of the chamber's work. Feel free to stop by the office to grab buttons or we would be happy to drop some off to you. Camp Petosega is getting ready for a fun weekend during their annual pre-Halloween festivities Saturday, Oct. 10th. All campers are invited to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters through the park from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and we still have quite a few campsites available for the weekend for anyone looking to do some nice fall camping in Emmet County! Please note that we will be closing the road through the campground during the trick-or-treating festivities, for the safety of the children running campsite to campsite. The road through the camping section of the park will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 to 8 p.m., please plan accordingly!
The Harbor Springs Ski Swap takes place on Saturday, October 10th from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the cafeteria of Nub's Nob during their annual open house. Cash and Credit are accepted. The ski hill is also hosting its annual open house during this time, which includes free chairlift rides and barbeque. The ski swap is a crucial fundraiser for the state championship winning Harbor Springs Ski Teams. Calling all Kids (Young and Old) - The fantastic story of Peter and the Wolf, told by Sheridan School Principal, Patrick Bevier, and the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, will be presented on October 10th at 2 p.m. at the John M. Hall Auditorium at Bay View. Hear about Peter's adventures in the woods and how the hunters deal with the wolf and save Peter. Instruments of the orchestra will represent Peter, the Wolf, a bird, a cat, and an unfortunate duck. Please join us in this wonderful story and demonstration of the instruments of the Orchestra. Ping Pong 4 OCD Ping Pong Tournament to raise awareness about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Northern Michigan will take place on Saturday October 10th at Central Elementary School in Petoskey from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. This year will the 5th Annual Tournament, and we will partner with The Petoskey Community Tennis Courts Organization to help raise funds for the Petoskey High School Tennis Courts. North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture will welcome Bill Shepler for a presentation on Miss Margy on Friday, October 16th. The program will be held in the College's Library conference room. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry recently launched its largest, most technologically advanced boat, the "Miss Margy," to take passengers to Mackinac Island quickly and in air-conditioned comfort. The North Central Michigan College Foundation will honor the Frey Foundation at the Founders Society Award luncheon at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, October 22nd, in the Library on North Central's Petoskey campus. The Frey Foundation will receive a Founders Society Award honoring its dedication to the College and Foundation, and for its significant positive impact on the growth and development of the College.

It's almost time to experience the 7th Annual Headlands Challenge & Triple Fright Night, with FREE events planned at the International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands, McGulpin Point Lighthouse and Mackinaw's Heritage Village on Saturday, October 24th at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park, McGulpin Point Lighthouse and Heritage Village. North Central Michigan College invites the public to a special presentation and book-signing with best-selling author Emily St. John Mandel. The event will be held on Tuesday, November 3 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Iron Horse Café on the Petoskey campus. This is a free event. Ms. St. John Mandel will discuss her book, Station Eleven, answer questions and sign books following the presentation.

Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is in desperate need of volunteer help! Our focus for the upcoming week is the first build on Lantern Walk in the Habitat subdivision! Volunteers are needed Tuesday, October 13th and Wednesday, October 14th from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. We will be assembling ICF blocks around the perimeter of the home. These blocks are like big Legos which would be fun for the whole family! We are beginning concrete slab pour on Saturday, October 17th. We are in need of four volunteers, sixteen and older to help. Job seekers will have an opportunity to gain skills for high-demand jobs at a CNC Machinist Training class organized by Northwest Michigan Works!. The class is being offered at North Central Michigan College (NCMC) in Petoskey and will be held three days a week for two weeks beginning October 27. Employers in Northwest Michigan are looking for people with CNC Machining skills. The hands-on, short-term training at NCMC's new CNC Machining Lab will prepare participants for jobs and additional training with an employer. Tim Bondy Physical Therapy announces the reopening of the Alanson-Conway clinic located at 1171 W. Conway Road. The clinic was originally opened in 2000 and closed as part of a restructuring plan at the end of 2013. It is now open for full therapy services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthopaedic manual therapy, hand therapy as well as adult fitness classes and memberships.
