Call for Volunteers! Little Traverse Half Marathon and 10K Run/Walk. What are you doing Saturday, September 19th? Get inspired, have a blast and give back to your community! Be a part of the 100+ volunteer crew stationed around the bay for the Little Traverse Half Marathon and 10K Run/Walk. We need your help (and so do the runners!) handing out water at aid stations and directing runners in the right direction. A new genealogy interest group will meet at the Petoskey District Library beginning this September. Anyone who is interested in genealogy or local history is invited to the group's first meeting 2-4 p.m. Monday, September 21st, at the Petoskey District Library. The group will meet every third Monday of the month. Participants are encouraged to bring as much family information with them as possible. Each session will focus on a different topic. The first meetings theme is, "Beginning Genealogy: Where to begin? The who, what, when and where of family history." The group will be led by genealogist Barbara Manley Hernden.
The Northern Michigan Chorale invites area singers to join voices for its fall concert, "Showstoppers". Register Monday, Sept. 21st at 6:30 p.m. at Cross of Christ Church on East Mitchell. Rehearsals are Mondays at 7 p.m. Visit nmchorale.org to pre-register. NMC has prepared a line-up of popular songs for all ages, from Irving Berlin to Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera." The Chorale is a non-auditioned community chorus and all are welcome. Fall concerts will be held at Crooked Tree Nov. 20-22. Students may receive credit from North Central Michigan College, by signing up for Music 101: Chorale 1 by Sept. 14th and a NMC $10 music fee. Scholarships available. Crooked Tree Arts Center Coffee @ Ten with Artist and Juror Ladislav Hanka on Tuesday, September 22nd. Ladislav R. Hanka will present a Coffee @ Ten lecture in Petoskey. He will be discussing his current muse, creating art with bees. Hanka makes art with a quarter million honey bees by setting his finely crafted etchings within the hive and letting the bees work in symphony with his artwork. The Mask You Live In is a must-see film for parents, educators and those who care about the wellbeing of young men and boys. It delves into the destructive and often conflicting messages boys are being subjected to on a daily basis that favor dominance over empathy, physical strength over compassion and violence over kindness. This free community screening of The Mask You Live In will be shown at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, September 24th, at North Central Michigan College Library, followed by an informal discussion. The Taste of Harbor Springs continues to delight event goers against the beautiful backdrop of Little Traverse Bay! With a new array of restaurants, nestled next to old favorites, this event involves some of Northern Michigan's finest and continue to put forth a culinary extravaganza. Set along the waterfront in downtown Harbor Springs on Saturday (12-3pm), September 26th this event will be a day of libations and lots of delicious foods. The Little Traverse Historical Society's historic home tour is Saturday, September 26th from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. Ticket holders should convene at the History Museum at 1 pm for tour information and directions. Participants on the self-guided tour will tour five historic homes and the Carnegie Building. Tickets are $20 and available at the History Museum and at the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce for cash or check. Call the museum to charge your tickets over the phone at 231.347.2620. Friends of the Petoskey Library Carnegie Lecture Series presents veterinarian and wildlife photographer Dr. Carl Palazzolo, D.V.M. at 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 28th, 2015. Dr. P combines his knowledge of photography and exotic animal veterinary medicine to deliver a presentation and spectacular slideshow which highlights his many trips all over the globe. He encourages anyone from the general public to budding photographers, or veterinarian medicine students to attend. It is sure to be a hit with anyone interested in wildlife, photography and animal conservation.

McLaren Northern Michigan hosts motivational speaker, comedian, and author Yvonne Conte. Conte will be in northern Michigan on Wednesday, September 30th, offering a special presentation about how a good sense of humor is essential to living a healthy, well-balanced life. Hospice of Northwest Michigan's grief support program provides support and education to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one - a spouse, parent, child, sibling, relative, friend or companion. Meetings are led by David Behling an experienced grief counselor and support group facilitator; this support program includes discussions of specific topics, and provides optional personal sharing opportunities in a safe and accepted atmosphere. Our next five week session begins October 1 and meets every Thursday thru October 29. Meet in the community room of First Baptist church located at 06781 M66 in Charlevoix from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.
