North Central Michigan College and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians celebrated the opening of the new stationary CNC lab with a ribbon-cutting this week in the Technology building on the Petoskey campus. The lab has state-of-the-art Computer Numeric Control and computer assisted manufacturing equipment, paid for through the $1.5 million ANA SEEDS (Sustainable Employment and Economic Development Strategies) grant received by the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in September, 2014.

Tickets are still available for the 15th Annual Cash Raffle, a fundraiser for Friendship Centers of Emmet County, Council on Aging. Ten cash prizes, including a $10,000 grand prize, will be awarded at the Cash Raffle Party on Thursday, September 10th at the Fairgrounds Community Center. The final early bird drawing is August 12. Little Traverse Half Marathon and 10K Run/Walk is September 19th. It's fast, flat and fun! The Little Traverse Half Marathon offers a unique point-to-point course around Little Traverse Bay in northern Michigan, from Bay Harbor to Harbor Springs. With incredible views of Lake Michigan, runners will follow a diverse and historic route along the base of a cliff, past the shoreline and beside dunes. A 10K Run/Walk is also open to those who are looking for something a little easier. This race starts in Petoskey State Park and takes runners past sand dunes and along wooded back dunes. Both races end at the waterfront in Harbor Springs. Proceeds benefit two environmental organizations - Step Up for Baldy and the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Academy. Find out more.
Hops & Highlands Microbrew Festival is September 26th at Boyne Highlands Resort. The 2nd Annual Hops 'n Highlands Microbrew Festival features more than 40 Michigan breweries with over 175 different beers. Enjoy live music as you celebrate the art of craft beer amongst the colors of the fall season. Admission is free and tickets are available for purchase to sample beers, which are four-ounce pours. The Little Traverse Historical Society's historic home tour is Saturday, September 26th from 1 to 4 in the afternoon. Ticket holders should convene at the History Museum at 1 pm for tour information and directions. Participants on the self-guided tour will tour five historic homes and the Carnegie Building. Tickets are $20 and available at the History Museum and at the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce for cash or check. Call the museum to charge your tickets over the phone at 231.347.2620. Tickets will also be available at the History Museum on the day of the event. Homes on the tour this year are: 418 Waukazoo Street, 924 E. Mitchell Street 714 Grove Street, 721 E. This year's Harvest Moon arrives under the spell of Earth's shadow and will appear totally eclipsed everywhere east of the Rocky Mountains, including at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City. Join Headlands staff under the night sky starting Sunday evening, Sept. 27th through total eclipse phase and into the early hours of Monday, Sept. 28, as the eclipse completes. Light refreshments, telescopes, and art supplies will be provided. Program will be both indoors and out, and no reservations are necessary. Due to construction, we do have a limited amount of parking at the Guest House, transportation will be provided from the entrance to the park once the Guest House parking lot is full. The Essence of Emmet historical collaborative will host another of its twice-yearly historical programs on Wednesday, Sept. 30th at the Petoskey Fairgrounds. "Emmet Underground: The Prohibition Era Up North" is the topic for this free program that is open to the public at the Community Building at the Fairgrounds. Time is 6 to 8 p.m. No reservations are required and refreshments will be served during an intermission. In addition to the program, the Second Annual Essence of Emmet History Awards will be presented to individuals, businesses and organizations in Emmet County who are doing great work preserving and promoting local history. Dripworks in Downtown Petoskey has new Fall hours. As we are losing some of our most beloved employees to new adventures (goodebye Kirsten!) and the start of school this week, we will be moving back to fall hours a little earlier than expected. New hours will be: Tuesday 8 - 3, Wednesday 8 - 3, Thursday 8 - 3, Friday 8 - 5, Saturday 8 - 5, and Sunday 9 - 3. This is a new schedule for all of us, and we are excited that by having a few slightly shorter weekdays, we will be able to stay open a little later on Friday and Saturday.
