Kids' Festival Weekend at Boyne Mountain Resort March 13th-15th. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra announces its forthcoming jazz concert entitled "Jazzed Up." The concert is scheduled for Saturday, March 14th, 7 p.m. and will be held at the Petoskey Middle School located at 801 Northmen Drive. Jazz takes center stage with works including Stravinsky's Ragtime for 11 Instruments, Gershwin's Lullaby for Strings, and tributes to Copland and "Duke" Ellington. In addition the Petoskey High School Jazz Band will perform the Ellington tribute with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra. In a truly brilliant finale solos are passed around the orchestra and everyone swings! Saturday March 14th is the 53rd Annual Nub's Nob Open - Northern Michigan's premier slalom racing event.  Top to bottom World Cup style slalom racing on Birch Run and Smokey. $8 entry fee. This race also counts for participants in the season-long Volkl/Marker/Sunice Speed Series as race # 6. On Sunday March 15th it's the Volkl/Marker/Sunice Speed Series sponsored by Petoskey Brewing Company. Super G Racing on Sno Pro. Championship final in 7 event series. Open to advanced skiers age 9 and up, sign-up for one race or the entire series.  Series awards to top 3 finishers in this Super G. Awards for Age/Gender classes and Overall follow this race.

Petoskey area businesses and employers are invited to a free "working lunch" March 19th to learn about and discuss solutions to the region's labor shortage. The lunch will run from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Stafford's Perry Hotel, 100 Lewis Street in Petoskey. The event is being hosted by Networks Northwest and Northwest Michigan Works. The lunch meeting will give local businesses an opportunity to learn about the region's labor shortage, and how it is impacted by skills gaps and barriers to employment. Businesses will also be able to share their experiences, ideas, and solutions for the labor shortages. Community Awareness Seminar on Concussion Treatment and Challenges. Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center is collaborating with Bayside Family & Sports Medicine to host a free seminar on "Concussion Treatment and Challenges that Face our Young Athletes". The presentation will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the Harbor Springs clinic of Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center, located at 8452 M-119, Harbor Plaza, Harbor Springs. Dr. Todd Sheperd, from Bayside Family & Sports Medicine, and Julie Slifka, Athletic Trainer, from Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center will be presenting the latest return to play protocols, the importance of concussion testing, and symptoms for recognizing mild to severe concussions. Bring your friends and family to Lincoln Elementary's Spring Carnival and Silent Auction on Friday, March 20th - 6:00-8:30 p.m. at 616 Connable Ave., Petoskey. The theme is "The Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss," so join in the fun by dressing as your favorite Dr. Seuss character! Carnival Weekend at Boyne Mountain Resort, March 20th-22nd. The biggest and best spring celebration in the north is back, Carnival Weekend. Nearly every establishment offers a party with free entry to ages 21+. From the Wig & Crazy Hair Party in the Trophy Room Pub & Pizzeria to the Foggy Goggles Pool Party and an evening with The Breakfast Club, an 80s tribute band from Chicago, in the Civic Center, the party never ends. Presentation on the American Kestrel and National Research Surrounding its Population Decline on Saturday March 21st from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Carnegie Building in Petoskey. Learn more about how to get involved in studying this bird on LTC nature preserves. Be part of the national movement led by the American Kestrel Partnership. Kestrels are the smallest of the falcon family, and should be arriving soon. Join the Michigan Youth Opportunities Initiative (MYOI) for a Princess Playdate Fundraiser on March 21st  at the Zion Lutheran Church in Petoskey from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. MYOI is a program to help support foster youth successfully transition to adulthood. Crooked Tree Arts Center is celebrating Women's History Month on Tuesday, March 24th. Professional magician and illusionist, Jania Taylor, will be presenting, "Those Magical Dames" in the Gilbert Gallery at 10:00 a.m. as part of the ever popular Coffee @ Ten lecture series. Magic has always been thought of as a male dominated field; women are stereotypically viewed as the beautiful assistant and not the performer. There are very few women performing as the magician, and when one does see a female performing it's a rare thing. However, magic has a rich history of women performing as the conjurer. The lecture is free and open to the public; refreshments are available, along with fresh coffee generously provided by Roast & Toast Café.

The Emmet County Road Commission will be hosting a Public Forum at the Emmet County Fairgrounds on March 26, from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on the May 5th ballot Proposal 1 (road funding initiative). Senator Wayne Schmidt and Representative Lee Chatfield are scheduled to be in attendance along with representatives from the City of Petoskey, City of Harbor Springs, Petoskey Schools, Harbor Springs Schools, and numerous townships. North Central Michigan College's Lecture Series will feature Marvel Comics Creative Director, Bill Rosemann, on Wednesday, April 15th, at 7 p.m. in North Central's Student and Community Resource Center gymnasium on the Petoskey campus. This lecture is free and open to the public.  Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Coming soon to a museum near you! Not everyone travels over spring break and for those who are staying close to home for whatever reason; the excitement is building at Raven Hill Discovery Center as they have collaborated with NASA to bring a display of lunar geological specimens to northern Lower Michigan. Visitors will also be able to see shuttle tiles from Atlantis and Endeavor. This special exhibit runs daily from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28 through Friday, April 10 and is open to the public. The hands-on museum and animals will also be available for visitors to explore and the outdoor exhibits will be open. Little Traverse Conservancy invites northern Michigan high school artists and scientists to create a poster promoting our new EcoStewards Program. We are seeking posters to communicate the value of protecting northern Michigan's natural lands and wild creatures. All high school students, grades 9-12, in the Conservancy's service region are eligible.
