Professional Women in Building of Northern Michigan Wins National Awards
The Professional Women in Building of Northern Michigan was recently honored at the January 2015 International Builders' Show in Las Vegas for the awards won in the Professional Women in Building competition. The Professional Women in Building Council of the HBA of Northern Michigan has won two awards in the Professional Women in Building competition. PWB-HBA won Community Outreach, 1st place for their "Lucky 7 Builder Raffle Run" fundraiser and also won 2nd place for the Innovative Program for their Educational Series. The NAHB Professional Women in Building Council Awards Committee recognizes local PWB Councils in numerous categories, who have made significant contributions to the building industry at the local, state and/or national levels. Awards won were a $400 scholarship and a $200 scholarship from the NAHB Professional Women in Building Hope Scholarship Fund. The recipient of the scholarship must be studying a course related to the building industry. Members of the PWB are still in discussion as to where they will use the scholarship.

Raven Hill Discovery Center will celebrate the last day of Engineer Week on Saturday, February 28, from Noon to 4 p.m. Families can explore various engineering careers at hands-on stations. Friendship Centers of Emmet County is hosting a walk-a-thon on Saturday, March 7th at the NCMC Walking Track to raise funds for Meals on Wheels. North Central Michigan College graduate Kelly Suter will be the featured speaker at the Luncheon Lecture on Friday, March 13. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. with the presentation starting at noon in the Iron Horse Café (cafeteria) on the Petoskey campus. Kelly Suter, R.N., a 2008 graduate of North Central's nursing program, has recently returned from Liberia where she helped care for Ebola patients. Kelly Suter was featured on CBS 60 Minutes on Sunday, November 9 as part of their story called The Ebola Hot Zone. Cost for the event is $10 and includes lunch. Reservations are required. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra announces its forthcoming jazz concert entitled "Jazzed Up." The concert is scheduled for Saturday, March 14th, 7 p.m. and will be held at the Petoskey Middle School located at 801 Northmen Drive. Jazz takes center stage with works including Stravinsky's Ragtime for 11 Instruments, Gershwin's Lullaby for Strings, and tributes to Copland and "Duke" Ellington. In addition the Petoskey High School Jazz Band will perform the Ellington tribute with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra. In a truly brilliant finale solos are passed around the orchestra and everyone swings! The 2015 Project Connect will be held on Wednesday, March 18th from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Odawa Casino in Petoskey. Project Connect is a day of service for those in need right here in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.
