'Campfire Snowshoe and Native Storytelling' under the dark night sky on
Jan. 24th at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park kicks off New Year of programming! This afternoon and evening program is designed for the outdoor adventurer who wants to take a snowshoe hike to the stars. Program is free and open to the public, and reservations are not required. A limited number of snowshoes will be provided, together with light refreshment, a crackling fire and stories to warm you through the season. Please plan to bring your own snowshoes for this event, as only a limited number will be available to borrow. Little Traverse Conservancy invites you to their Winter Wonders for Knee-High Naturalists on Round Lake Nature Preserve, Saturday January 24th from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m., between Petoskey and Harbor Springs for ages 3-5. Siblings welcome. We'll start with a story about a winter walk and many of the beautiful things to be found in nature during this coldest of seasons. Then we'll take a snow hike of our own to explore the winter wonders at the Round Lake Nature Preserve. Friends @ the Carnegie presents Blissfest Music Organization - Past, Present and Future on Monday, January 26th at 7:00 p.m. Executive Director Jim Gillespie will describe the history of this award-winning roots music organization, the excitement and the challenges of presenting a major annual festival, and developing opportunities for the future. All Friends @ the Carnegie programs are held at the Carnegie Building at 451 E. Mitchell Street, unless otherwise noted. The programs are offered at 7:00 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month, except May (third Monday) and December (no program). All Friends @ the Carnegie programs are open to the public and admission is free.
Doing Business in China, part of the North Central Michigan College International lecture series, will take place on Wednesday January 28th at 1:00 p.m. at the Library Conference Center. This program is free and open to the public. Improved international relations, government reforms, an expanding economy and the large population base are make China very attractive to US businesses. Successful US-Chinese business ventures require a knowledge of the business culture, etiquette, meeting protocols and more. Learn how to approach Chinese business people and officials, what to expect, what to do and what to avoid. Bruce Finlayson, former Executive with AT&T and Lucent Technologies, currently with consulting firm ICP BizSolutions, will discuss his recent experiences doing business with China's doctors, including traditional Chinese medicine practices.
An organization known as "FLOW" - For Love of Water - will hold a program about fracking on January 27th in Petoskey. It will take place at the Community Building at the Emmet County Fairgrounds, 1129 Charlevoix Ave. in Petoskey. The program begins at 6 p.m. The presentation is titled, "Horizontal fracking for oil and gas in Michigan: Legal strategies and tools for local communities and citizens." Baker College of Cadillac will host College Goal Sunday, 2-4 p.m., Feb. 8th, to help potential college-bound students and their parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form on time. North Central Michigan College and the Robert Emmet Society seek entries for a scholarship contest that will send a North Central student to Ireland this fall for a semester of study. The competition is based on an essay contest, academic achievement, student activities and an interview with college and society representatives. Entrants must be enrolled in an academic program at North Central Michigan College for the 2014-2015 school year. Camp Daggett offers winter activities Father, stepfathers, grandfathers or big brothers are invited to bring their sons (ages 8-16) for a fun filled Father/Son weekend, March 13th-15th at Camp Daggett. North Central Michigan College's nursing and allied health faculty will hold monthly information sessions on Thursdays at 4 p.m. to explain the process for admission into the college's highly competitive nursing and allied health career programs. The sessions will be in Room 347 of the college's Health Education and Science Center on the Petoskey campus. Sessions will take place on Thursday, February 19th, Thursday, March 19th and, Thursday, April 23rd. Anyone planning to apply for the nursing or allied health programs is strongly encouraged to attend one of these informational sessions. Raven Hill Discovery Center's Ham Radio Station is up and running. With help from members of the Top Of Michigan Amateur Radio Club (TOMARC) in Gaylord, the station is operational and the first class of technicians has received their ham radio licenses. Recently, local electric company, Great Lakes Energy, came to the station's rescue, when sliding snow ripped the new ham radio antenna off the Center's roof. A Great Lakes crew came out and set a utility pole for Raven Hill to use as a freestanding antenna.
