Local Food Hero Honored at North Central Michigan College
David Coveyou, owner of Coveyou's Scenic Farm, received the 2014 Local Food Hero award on November 12th at Around the Table: Growing Together, the second food and farming conference sponsored by North Central Michigan College and the Local Food Alliance (LFA). Local Food Alliance members submitted nominations and comments, praising Dave as a "renaissance farmer-engineer who dedicated his life to providing our community with the high quality food to feed not just our bodies, but our minds and souls, our relationships and community." LFA members praised Coveyou for training young farmers, using geo-thermal and solar energy on his farm, and partnering with businesses, institutions and stores to get more local farm products into the community.

The 2014-15 Swirl season at the Crooked Tree Arts Center continues with the annual Holiday Wine Market on Sunday, November 16th from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Esperance will be providing over 30 varietals and featuring special appetizers and entertaining ideas. Oleson's Food Stores in Petoskey and Charlevoix host a "Dollar Drive" Sunday, November 16 through Thanksgiving. Dollars raised help support domestic abuse survivors and their children at the Safe Home. The Safe Home is operated by the Women's Resource Center of Northern Michigan 24/7 and provides domestic abuse services at no charge to survivors in Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet and Otsego counties. Last year, the Safe Home provided more than 8,700 meals to 140 women and children. The "Dollar Drive" helps offset Safe Home food and supply costs that exceed $25,000 annually. Benefit Dinner and Auction for Jenna Giddings & Family on Monday November 17th at the PHS Cafeteria from 5-7 p.m. Ottawa Elementary is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner and a Silent Auction where the proceeds of the dinner and auction will benefit Jenna Giddings and her family. Jenna is a Kindergarten student at Ottawa and has been diagnosed with, and treated for, a PNET brain tumor for almost a year. Recent tests have shown the aggressive tumor is growing, and there are no other treatment options available to Jenna. Funds raised will help offset the cost of treatment, travel, and time off work for the family. The dinner donation is $5 per person, $20 per family. Additional donations graciously accepted.
The Student Senate at North Central Michigan College is hosting the 4th annual Canned Food Drive, Monday, November 17th. The goal this year is to raise 3,000 food items benefiting Emmet, Otsego and Cheboygan counties. On Monday, November 17th, donors who bring their food items to the Iron Horse Café (formerly the cafeteria in the Student Center) will receive a free 8-ounce iced latte. Help support our students and our community with your donations. Camp Daggett Adventure Center will offer an Adventure Education/Challenge Course Training Workshop on Thursday and Friday, November 20th-21st at Camp Daggett's indoor center on Walloon Lake from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day. This workshop is designed to give the participant a hands-on experience in adventure education and utilization of a challenge ropes course. Anyone working with young people will be given ideas and activities that can be taken back to the workplace and used with minimal props and expense. The 4th Annual PHS Holiday Craft & Gift Show is Saturday, November 22nd from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Petoskey High School gym. Emmet County's annual Christmas Holiday Arts, Crafts and Gift Show will take place this year on Saturday, November 22nd, at the Community Building at the Emmet County Fairgrounds.
