Let's Put Petoskey on the Map

Our local businesses make Petoskey, well... Petoskey! That's why we're partnering with Google to get every business in our area online and to put Petoskey on the map.

These days, people turn to the web first to find local products and services. When your business is online, it's easier for people to find you. That means new customers for you - and a stronger community for all of us.

Getting your business online is free and easy through the Let's Put Petoskey on the Map program.

Register for the Nov. 18th Connecting Women in Business

Register today for the next Connecting Women in Business Group luncheon on November 18, 2014 at North Central Michigan College's Library Conference Room. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 a.m. The Lunch begins at noon, with presentation following and event ends at 1 p.m. "Textiles in the World Economy and at Home" will be presented by Shanna Robinson, Art Professor-North Central Michigan College. Register for HERE for the November CWIB.

Your clothes may be more well-travelled than you are - learn about where, how, and at what cost, textiles today are grown, harvested, dyed, manufactured, and marketed. Imagine ways to make fabric production sustainable economically, environmentally, and ethically.

Robinson will explain the historical importance of the textiles - from cotton, to linen, wool and silk - and the situation of the market today. Robinson will discuss growing our own fibers and dyes, processing fibers, and creating great textile products in our own communities.

Robinson grows and collects dye plants in Horton Bay, Michigan. She teaches art at North Central Michigan College, including classes in textiles, ceramics, color and design, where she is thrilled to share her passion for fibers, the environment and natural color. Shanna earned an MFA and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University.

The sponsors are health-themed for this luncheon. BeautyCounter and Ruthi Hannah, Nerium International Skin Care Products are sponsors. PNC Bank is the 2014 Marquee Sponsor of CWIB and Lite 96.3 is the Radio Sponsor.

Connecting Women in Business Group Announces New Round of GO GRANTS

Connecting Women in Business (CWIB) group announces an important opportunity for girls grades 6 to 10 in the Char-Em ISD. We are accepting applications for Go Grants for activities for girls from January 1 to May 31, 2015.
Applications must be postmarked by December 1, 2014.

The impact of the Go Grants has been significant. They were first awarded in 2010, and since that time 93 girls have received over $36,000 in Go Grants. Go Grants monies are raised during an annual October silent auction luncheon help by the CWIB group.

GO Grants, or Girls Outreach Grants, will reach out to young girls in our area who have an idea and passion to try something new. Grants range from $100 to $500, and can be used as resources in any field of endeavor. The purpose of the grants is to provide small grants to girls in grades 6 to 10 in the Char-Em ISD service area of Charlevoix, Emmet and northern Antrim counties. These grants will allow the applicant to pursue a special interest gain or improve a skill, participate in an outdoor experience and more. We encourage applications that will be challenging to the applicant.

The ideal applicants are girls who have not received awards for outstanding achievements. CWIB is seeking girls who do not ordinarily apply for awards. We are looking for under-represented girls who need more support to realize their potential. Girls need to clearly state their financial need, as well as describe a special interest that will spark their imagination, creativity, or follow a dream that they may not imagine possible. For more information, call Lisa Hoyt 347-4150.
