McLaren Northern Michigan invites community members to properly dispose of medications and other items on, Wednesday, October 15th in Petoskey. Partnering with local law enforcement, McLaren Northern Michigan is offering a free drive through drop-off in Petoskey on October 15th off of Mitchell Street across from Johan's Bakery from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Items being accepted for proper disposal or recycling at these times include, eye glasses, hearing aids, cell phones, shoes and used sharps (household generated "sharps" include: Hypodermic needles, Syringes, and Lancets. The first 50 participants who recycle sharps will receive a FREE sharps disposal kit. This event is sponsored by the City of Petoskey Police Department.


 

Area restaurants who will be donating 10% of their earnings on October 16th to Char-Em United Way in support of programs focused on assisting ALICE households Kelsye's Lakeside Grille and Scovies Gourmet in Charlevoix, Murray's in East Jordan, and The Bistro in Petoskey, "ALICES Restaurants," are each contributing 10% of their sales on Thursday Oct. 16th to Char-Em United Way. "Families living at or under the ALICE Threshold often can't afford to dine out", say's Jan Boss, Char-Em United Way board member. "Knowing that 38% of the households in the Charlevoix and Emmet Counties are unable to afford the state's cost of living, with conditions still lagging behind pre-recession levels, these restaurants have decided to help". North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture on Friday, October 17th, will offer information about birding in our area. The lecture will be at noon in the Library conference room on the Petoskey campus. Charlevoix and Emmet counties are home to 236 species of birds and many excellent places to view and photograph them. Darrell Lawson, the acting president of the Petoskey Regional Audubon Society, and Lisa Hoyt, promotions coordinator, will discuss birding and show images of bird species that can be found at the various locations in our area. 'The Hero's Meteor Shower' is the next Dark Sky Park program at the Headlands on Friday, Oct. 17th. In addition to the stories linked to the Orionid Meteor Shower, there will be a presentation on the parent comet of the Orionids, the famous Halley's Comet, which is the parent of at least two meteor showers we experience overhead through the course of the year. Program will occur indoors and out, rain, snow or shine, so dress for the weather, bring something suitable for sitting on outdoors, and join us with family and friends under the deep clear October skies at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park. The Petoskey Ski Team is holding their largest fundraiser of the year; the Annual Ski Swap on Saturday October 25th, from 8am to Noon.The swap will be at the Central Elementary School cafeteria on the corner of State and Howard Streets in Petoskey. This is a great opportunity to buy and sell new and used skis, snowboards, boots, helmets and clothing.  The public is invited to drop off equipment to be sold on Friday, October 24, from 5-8pm and pickup unsold equipment on Saturday, October 25 from 2-4pm. 20% of the sale price of all items sold will be donated to the Ski Teams. The member/owners of Bay Winds Federal Credit recently approved a partnership with Members Credit Union of Traverse City, creating the most comprehensive network of locally-owned financial institutions in northern Michigan. More than 76 percent (2,900 in support and 910 opposed) of those voting endorsed the partnership. Voting was concluded at a Special Meeting held October 1, where results were certified by a third party accounting firm. The partnership expects to yield enhanced convenience and account management tools, increased member value derived from operational efficiencies, and a stronger, more innovative financial institution. The joined credit union is slated to begin operating under a new name in early 2015. In the interim, both institutions will continue operations as usual.
