The Headlands International Dark Sky Park and Emmet County are pleased to announce special guest David H. Levy for the Sept. 20th, "A Night Watchman's Journey:  My Life and Hard Times as a Searcher of Comets." The Headlands program is offered in partnership with the Northern Michigan Astronomy Club and it occurs the night of September's waning Moon phase, which means skies will be clear for spectacular views of the thickest part of the Milky Way and the Summer Triangle. Stargazing will follow Levy's program. Reservations are not required, and the program is free of charge. FRIENDS @ THE CARNEGIE SPEAKER SERIES program for Monday, September 22nd at 7 p.m. will be "Michigan's Ghostly Beacons" with Dianna Stampfler of Promote Michigan. Nearly two dozen lights in Michigan are rumored to be haunted - from Seul Choix Point Light to White River Light Station to Waugoshance Shoal, these stories will entertain all ages - just in time for Halloween season. The Bank of Northern Michigan hosts Profit Mastery a Business Finance Workshop - Sept. 22nd & 23rd. The Bank of Northern Michigan (TBONM) is hosting, Profit Mastery, a two-day Business Finance Workshop designed to enhance the financial management skills of all business people. The two-day workshop is taught by the founder of Profit Mastery, Steve LeFever, and begins Monday, September 22 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme. The cost for this seminar is $495 for TBONM clients and $595 for non-clients. Registration includes the workbook and materials, lunch for both days, and a reception. Join Emmet County and the Essence of Emmet collaborative for a historical lecture series program exploring the 20th anniversary of the reaffirmation of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians as a federally recognized Indian tribe.

A panel of individuals who were part of the reaffirmation for LTBB, historians and Odawa elders will tell why it was so important for the tribe to pursue its status, the history leading up to 1994 and what Northern Michigan means for the Odawa.

Grain Train Natural Foods Market concludes their Summer Herbal Wisdom series on September 25th, 2014 with a Balms and Salves workshop from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the Grain Train Community Room. Before "The Hole in the Ground" Program on September 25th at 7:00 p.m. The Temple and Gaslight Theaters, Crago's, Cook Electric and the Ford dealership? Long before it became a vacant block this part of downtown Petoskey was filled with businesses.  After the failure of the Petoskey Pointe development, the city was left with what is commonly referred to as the "hole in the ground". Now with a new developer exploring ways to create new and exciting activity there, it is interesting to look back at what was there as we consider what will be. Petoskey Historic Homes Tour. The Little Traverse Historical Society announces a tour of historic Petoskey homes on Saturday, September 27th, between 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.  The tour begins with an orientation at the Little Traverse History Museum, and then the four beautiful and unique homes. Tickets cost $20 per person and can be purchased at the Little Traverse History Museum and at the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce. The four chosen homes are located at 1005 East Mitchell Street, 448 Grove Street, 918 Howard Street, and 100 Arlington Avenue, and represent diverse architectural styles and histories.  Please note: not all areas of the homes are handicapped accessible. Laughter Yoga with Tiffany Lenau on Friday, October 3rd at 1:00 p.m., at the Petoskey District Library labyrinth (weather permitting); otherwise in the lower level classroom. Learn and practice this unique combination of laughter and    yogic breathing with Tiffany Lenau. Tiffany discovered her love for yoga in 1992 and developed a strong personal practice in the years to follow. A Career Expo Event is scheduled for Friday, October 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at North Central Michigan College. The event will offer an opportunity for over 400 students from the local high schools to explore a variety of businesses and companies that correlate with the Michigan Career Pathways (Arts, Communication, Business, Management, Marketing, Technology, Engineering/Manufacturing, Industrial Technology, Health Sciences, Human Services, Natural Sciences, and Agriscience).  The event is being sponsored by Career Jump Start, Charlevoix Emmet Intermediate School District, North Central Michigan College, and Northwest Michigan Works. FREE Lecture Focusing on "Use of Complementary & Preventative Medicine for Living Well" Tuesday, October 14th, 2014 from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at North Central Michigan College (Conference Room 3), 1515 Howard Street, Petoskey. Mark A. Moyad, MD, MPH, Director of Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the U of M Medical Center will speak on diet and dietary supplements for cancer prevention, treatment, survivorship and overall healthy living. Dr. Moyad is back by popular demand. He spoke to a large group of northern Michigan residents in 2013 and he is back again in 2014. Of Special Note

VISITORS UNDER AGE 12 TO McLAREN NORTHERN MICHIGAN RESTRICTED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. This is due to the increased number of a respiratory infections among youngsters in the region. Children under the age of 12 are restricted from visiting McLaren Northern Michigan patients until further notice due to the increased number of respiratory illnesses among youngsters in the region. Parents and guardians of children under age 12 should not bring youngsters with them to McLaren Northern Michigan to visit a patient until further notice. This is being implemented for the health of patients and visitors alike. McLaren Northern Michigan staff will assess the situation daily and announce when the visiting restriction for children under the age of 12 is lifted.


 

BICYCLE RACKS ON AREA BUSES. Straits Regional Ride bus system, in cooperation with the Top of Michigan Trails Council, has installed bicycle racks on seven of its twelve buses. SRR serves Cheboygan, Emmet and Presque Isle counties. Each rack carries up to three bicycles.
