Dance under the stars at Headlands on Sept. 5th to celebrate the Harvest Moon at the Dark Sky Viewing Area at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Enjoy the dynamic sounds of the Moxie Strings for our first-ever Harvest Moon Dance under the big tent, a big Moon, and starry skies. As with all Headlands events, the Moxie Strings dance will take place rain or shine and there is no cost to attend. Reservations are not necessary. Refreshments will be available. The dance will take place under a large tent near the designated Dark Sky Viewing Area; follow the signs in the park. It is with great regret that the Hospice of Northwest Michigan Country Barn Dance & Auction scheduled for Saturday, September 6th, has been cancelled. McLean and Eakin will host Hug a Book Week in Downtown Petoskey from September 6th-14th to celebrate the release of Scott Campbell's new book, "Hug Machine." New Fall Classes at North Woods Yoga. A new session of classes begins at North Woods Yoga, on the third floor of 316 1/2 East Mitchell above Grand Traverse Pie Co. on September 8th. Students new to North Woods Yoga are welcome, and the clear, step by step instruction assumes no experience. Beginners and experienced students both benefit from the Iyengar yoga approach, either by refining their understanding of the yoga poses or learning them for the first time. The Northern Michigan Chorale, under the direction of Julie Pierpont will present their fall concerts "Music Has Brought Us Together" on November 22 and 23. Great lakes chamber orchestra Sunday Series Recita returns with Dr. Ondras and the Baroquen Ensemble on Sunday, September 14th at 4:00 p.m. We are kicking off our fourteenth season with another beautiful Sunday Series Recital, held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Charlevoix. North Central Michigan College's luncheon lecture series for the fall semester will begin on Friday, September 19th. A wide variety of topics will be featured: women in politics, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, birding, the bassoon, the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and wines of Northern Michigan. Char-Em United Way will unveil its first statewide ALICE Study, The reality is that 1.54 million Michigan households are unable to afford life's basic necessities. That number includes those living in poverty and a population often overlooked -- ALICE, a United Way acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed. The Bank of Northern Michigan hosts Profit Mastery a Business Finance Workshop - Sept. 22nd & 23rd. The Bank of Northern Michigan (TBONM) is hosting, Profit Mastery, a two-day Business Finance Workshop designed to enhance the financial management skills of all business people. The two-day workshop is taught by the founder of Profit Mastery, Steve LeFever, and begins Monday, September 22 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme. The cost for this seminar is $495 for TBONM clients and $595 for non-clients. Registration includes the workbook and materials, lunch for both days, and a reception. Join Emmet County and the Essence of Emmet collaborative for a historical lecture series program exploring the 20th anniversary of the reaffirmation of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians as a federally recognized Indian tribe. A panel of individuals who were part of the reaffirmation for LTBB, historians and Odawa elders will tell why it was so important for the tribe to pursue its status, the history leading up to 1994 and what Northern Michigan means for the Odawa. The event will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 24th at the Emmet County Fairgrounds Community Building. It is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. Northwest Michigan Works! is offering a scholarship for an unemployed individual to enroll in a CNC Certificate Program that begins this fall in Charlevoix. The nine month long program is offered through Baker College of Cadillac and starts September 29 during the evenings at Charlevoix High School. Class sizes are small and taught by working professionals to provide plenty of one-on-one interaction and hands-on training, including actual work experience. Students learn to operate lathes, mills, precision measuring tools, and related attachments and accessories to cut, drill, shape, and finish products and component parts. To be eligible, individuals must be unemployed, laid off from a previous job, and capable of completing the training program. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be temporarily widening US-31 between Camp Daggett Road and Eppler Road. Work beings soon and will include tree clearing, removing and replacing culverts, minor water main and drainage work, and reconstructing side roads at Mason and Blackbird roads. This work is in preparation for a 2015 project to reconstruct and resurface 4.2 miles of US-31 from US-131 to Camp Daggett Road.
