Raven Hill open over Labor Day Weekend! Treat yourself and your family to an afternoon or a day of fun and exploration at Raven Hill Discovery Center this weekend or this fall and winter.Raven Hill will be open every day from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. this Labor Day weekend--Friday, August 29th through Tuesday, September 2nd.  On Wednesday, September 3rd, fall and winter hours will go into effect and the Center will be open 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays or by appointment.   Fall/Winter hours last through Memorial Day.  Raven Hill is also always open most holiday breaks and is always open by appointment. For more information and a list of classes, phone 231-536-3369 or 877-833-4254 OR check out the Center's website at www.ravenhilldiscoverycenter.org

Chainsaw Carving Demonstration on Saturday August 30th and Sunday August 31st from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Sturgeon River Pottery in Petoskey. Award winning Michigan-based chainsaw sculptor Chad Denkins will conduct a live demonstration of his wood sculpting and carving art.  He will also present a collection of his work, which includes several northern Michigan themed pieces. The Waldvogel Insurance Agency office at 2202 Mitchell Park Dr. in Petoskey, and agents Janet Buchanan and Bob Esford will be moving on September 4th & 5th to join staff at Harbor/Brenn Agencies at 1231 N US 31 HWY in Petoskey.  Support staff at Harbor/Brenn will be assisting clients during the two day transition - phone numbers remain the same and clients needing to visit in person should plan on going to the Harbor/Brenn office for assistance.  Business as usual resumes Monday, September 8th with everyone under one roof! 

 

 

Dance under the stars at Headlands on Sept. 5th to celebrate the Harvest Moon at the Dark Sky Viewing Area at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Enjoy the dynamic sounds of the Moxie Strings for our first-ever Harvest Moon Dance under the big tent, a big Moon, and starry skies.

As with all Headlands events, the Moxie Strings dance will take place rain or shine and there is no cost to attend. Reservations are not necessary. Refreshments will be available. The dance will take place under a large tent near the designated Dark Sky Viewing Area; follow the signs in the park. Learn about the art of Zentangle this September at the Petoskey District Library during Hobbies in the Lobby on September 5th from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Interfaith minister, life coach and avid crafter, Deb Hansen, became interested in calligraphy and lettering several years ago. This past winter Deb took a short Zentangle class in Florida, where she resides for the winter, and has been practicing ever since. Supplies will be provided. Paper Painting at Crooked Tree Arts Center. Local artist, instructor, and farmer, Anne Morningstar is offering a Crooked Tree Arts Center workshop based on her paper painting technique.  In the workshop, Morningstar will work with participants sharing her techniques and hints as students create small paper painting works of their own. McLaren Northern Michigan offers low cost prostate screening in Cheboygan on Tuesday, September 9th from 4:30 - 7 p.m. at the Cheboygan Community Medical Center. Then again in Petoskey on Wednesday September 10th from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the John and Marnie Demmer Wellness Pavilion and Dialysis Center. Screening includes a PSA blood test and education. Great lakes chamber orchestra Sunday Series Recita returns with Dr. Ondras and the Baroquen Ensemble on Sunday, September 14th at 4:00 p.m. We are kicking off our fourteenth season with another beautiful Sunday Series Recital, held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Charlevoix. North Central Michigan College's luncheon lecture series for the fall semester will begin on Friday, September 19th.  A wide variety of topics will be featured:  women in politics, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, birding, the bassoon, the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and wines of Northern Michigan. Char-Em United Way will unveil its first statewide ALICE Study, The reality is that 1.54 million Michigan households are unable to afford life's basic necessities. That number includes those living in poverty and a population often overlooked -- ALICE, a United Way acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed. The Bank of Northern Michigan hosts Profit Mastery a Business Finance Workshop - Sept. 22nd & 23rd. The Bank of Northern Michigan (TBONM) is hosting, Profit Mastery, a two-day Business Finance Workshop designed to enhance the financial management skills of all business people. The two-day workshop is taught by the founder of Profit Mastery, Steve LeFever, and begins Monday, September 22 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme. The cost for this seminar is $495 for TBONM clients and $595 for non-clients. Registration includes the workbook and materials, lunch for both days, and a reception. Join Emmet County and the Essence of Emmet collaborative for a historical lecture series program exploring the 20th anniversary of the reaffirmation of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians as a federally recognized Indian tribe. A panel of individuals who were part of the reaffirmation for LTBB, historians and Odawa elders will tell why it was so important for the tribe to pursue its status, the history leading up to 1994 and what Northern Michigan means for the Odawa. The event will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 24th at the Emmet County Fairgrounds Community Building. Drink in the Fall Season with Boyne Highlands' New Craft Beer Event.

Boyne Highlands has a new event on tap this fall for craft beer lovers. The Hops 'n Highlands Microbrew Festival takes place Saturday, September 27th, and is celebrating Michigan by featuring Michigan craft brewers exclusively.

Hops 'n Highlands offers free admission to ages 21 and older with tickets for beer tastings available for purchase.  Tickets are $2 each for a four-ounce pour. There will be 35 Michigan breweries with nearly 100 total beers including local favorites like Petoskey Brewing and Beards Brewery. There will also be live music, food and complimentary scenic chairlift rides. A Career Expo Event is scheduled for Friday, October 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at North Central Michigan College. The event will offer an opportunity for over 400 students from the local high schools to explore a variety of businesses and companies that correlate with the Michigan Career Pathways (Arts, Communication, Business, Management, Marketing, Technology, Engineering/Manufacturing, Industrial Technology, Health Sciences, Human Services, Natural Sciences, and Agriscience). The event is being sponsored by Career Jump Start, Charlevoix Emmet Intermediate School District, North Central Michigan College, and Northwest Michigan Works.  The focus will be on career exploration.
