Festival on the Bay - One Week Away!
All New Family Night! Full of Fun and Music on Thursday!
Family Night in the Entertainment Tent - $5 per family
Thursday, August 14 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Harbor Hoedown performs 7:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Families are invited to come experience old-time fun! There will also be games in the outfield for additional fun. The band Harbor Hoedown will be performing from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. All dances will be taught and there will be a caller for the dances. Etta's Kitchen will be the featured food vendor so some down for food, dancing and games during this new, alcohol-free event for families. Blissfest Music Organization presents this event as part of their commitment to sharing cultural heritage and providing a great way to socialize like folks used to do! Please Note: This is a family-friendly event! No alcohol will be served.

BBQ on the Bay Competition - Saturday, August 16 - Open to 10 Competitors
8:00 a.m. setup for grillers | 
Noon to 3:00 p.m. Tasting Event - $5 per person

BBQ on the Bay is an amateur rib grilling competition in an exciting, competitive environment with voting by Celebrity Judges and People's Choice. 

Grillers will be competing for the following prizes:

  • 1st Place Judge's Choice: $200 cash, Maxwell Cycle Shop Grilling Trophy, and a choice of a Weber Grill or Smoker from Meyer Ace Hardware ($299 value).
  • 2nd Place People's Choice: $100 cash

Competitors - The Grilling Competition

  • Each competitor will be given six (6) St. Louis Cut Spare Ribs to grill.
  • Judges will be given blind tastings of one rib prepared by each griller and will judge on Appearance, Taste, and Tenderness.
  • People's Choice will be a small taste and will be by Popular Vote.

Competitors - Required Items to Bring:

  • Your own grill!
  • Meat thermometer 
  • Serving tongs, knives, and grilling utensils
  • Minimum 24" x 24" Plastic Cutting Board
  • Non-Latex disposable gloves
  • Minimum 48 quart chest cooler

Competitors - Optional Items for Grilling:

  • Seasonings, rubs, spices, sauces, brine
  • All must be store bought with safety seal intact, sealed, and fully attached!
There will be music from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. by the Pistil Whips and we will have a special brew on tap from Beard's Brewery! Register now for BBQ on the Bay

On August 12, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. the Petoskey District Library will be hosting a BiblioCommons class for patrons to come and get acquainted with the new online catalog. We will help patrons log into and personalize their new account and teach how to use all the new features that BiblioCommons has to offer. To be prepared for this class you will need to bring your own device with any passwords or cords you may need.  You will also need to bring your library card and know your current pin. If you don't know your current pin you can get that information at the circulation desk of the Petoskey District Library. Please contact the library to register for class and if you have any questions at 231-758-3111. 

The Perseid Meteor Shower event! One of the most well-known meteor showers of the year, and the Headlands International Dark Sky Park staff welcomes the public to a free event on the night of Aug. 12th beginning at sunset. Guests are invited to enjoy an evening of celestial light with the promise of shooting stars throughout the night. 

When visiting the Headlands, please remember to use a red or amber-filtered light, if needed, and please park so that your headlights face away from the viewing area. Also note that the Etta's Kitchen Food Truck will be onsite throughout the evening Aug. 12 with food for purchase. Rain or shine, no reservations required. Char-Em United Way and Walmart in Petoskey will host a school supply drive on Saturday, Aug. 16th. A school bus will be at Walmart in Petoskey, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the community to fill with school supplies for local children in need. A bus will also be at K-Mart in Charlevoix. In addition, Char-Em United Way (CEUW) will have a table in the children's section at Festival on the Bay on Saturday with games and prizes. School supplies can be dropped off at any of the three event locations.

Auditions for Dracula are coming soon! Little Traverse Civic Theatre is holding auditions for their upcoming Fall Production of Dracula at 7:00 p.m. on both August 19th and 21st at Crooked Tree Arts Center. The cast will be compromised of 6 males and 2 females with Performances to take place October 16th-19th and 24th - 26th. Copies of the script are available for check out at the Petoskey District Library. The Charlevoix Area Community Pool announces the Great Lake Challenge! We invite all swimmers to stroke their way across the 5 Great Lakes by next summer - June 20th, 2015. Every 200 yards swam, or 10 lengths of our Pool, is equal to 1 mile across a Great Lake. The first lake to cross is Lake Ontario. At almost 200 miles long, you will need to swim 200 Pool lengths before you begin your trek across the next Great Lake. Pool staff will track your progress. No successfully completed challenge goes unrewarded! Great and FUN way to keep in shape, train for a triathlon, or improve your strokes. So grab a friend and take on the GREAT LAKES CHALLENGE! North Central Michigan College's nursing and allied health faculty will hold monthly information sessions on Thursdays starting in September at 4 p.m. to explain the process for admission into the college's highly competitive nursing and allied health career programs. The sessions will be in Room 347 of the college's Health Education and Science Center on the Petoskey campus unless otherwise noted.

Anyone planning to apply for the nursing or allied health programs is strongly encouraged to attend one of these informational sessions.
