The Disability Network of Northern Michigan cut the ribbon last week on their new beach pathway at Camp Petosega in Emmet County. The project is part of their Access for Everyone Campaign and allows those with disabilities access to the water.  The project will also include a mobi chair to enable them to float safely as well.  Pictured are representatives of The Disability Network of Northern Michigan, Emmet County, and the United Way along with Faith Dunshee, a Petoskey resident who helped to champion this project.

Movers and Shakers

Bay Winds Federal Credit Union & Members Credit Union announce partnership. The volunteer Boards of Directors of Members Credit Union of Traverse City and Bay Winds Federal Credit Union of Charlevoix announced their intent to partner, creating one of the strongest member-owned financial institutions in Michigan. The partnership will enhance convenience by offering 13 branch locations from Manistee to Petoskey. Combined operations will result in cost-savings; ensuring members will continue to enjoy the lower loan rates, lower service fees and higher returns on deposits they've come to expect from both institutions. The partnership would begin operating in late 2014 under a new name representative of the promising future awaiting the combined membership. Want to try a new place to see Lake Charlevoix fireworks? Join Conservancy staff as we celebrate our nation's freedom from the vantage point of The Hill Nature Preserve overlooking Boyne City. Hike will begin at Dusk on July 4th. From the Parking area on Clute Road we will hike about 1 mile to the top of The Hill. Registration is required by calling LTC at 231.347.0991 or through our website, www.landtrust.org. Bring a backpack with a blanket to sit on, any snacks you might want, and a flashlight. We will have a small bonfire and provide s'mores for you while watching the fireworks over Lake Charlevoix. PLEASE NOTE: NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED AT THE NATURE PRESERVE.

 

Little Traverse Sailors - Free Sailing July 4th!  Little Traverse Sailors (LTS), the local sailing school, is offering free sailing to the public immediately following the Harbor Springs parade until 4:00 p.m.  Simply show up.  Everyone welcome, no experience needed. A Painting Workshop at CTAC. Internationally known artist, Susan Blackwood will conduct a painting workshop at Crooked Tree Arts Center July 7th-10th.  Class meets from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with an additional evening session highlighting how to capture images for later use in painting. The workshop will focus on painting water, a perfect topic for Northern Michigan.  Ms. Blackwood will take students on a journey capturing dew, raindrops, waves, and the ocean or in this workshop our freshwater seas. Blackwood has been teaching workshops around the country and overseas in Pakistan, the Bahamas, Great Brittan, France, and Italy.  This a wonderful opportunity for artists and hobbiests with some painting experience. North Central Michigan College and Bay View will offer a special writing workshop, Write Your Heart Out: The Craft of The Personal Essay from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, July 7th to July 11th on the beautiful Bay View Campus. Discover powerful stories from your life and tell them in ways that will resonate with others, whether in print or online. The class is taught by North Central instructor Ken Winter, former editor and publisher of the Petoskey News-Review. Winter is also a Teacher Consultant with the National Writing Project. Kayaking enthusiasts are invited to participate in the 6th annual Kayak for a Cause on Walloon Lake, a fundraising event for the Camp Daggett Adventure Center (CDAC), Saturday, July 19th and Sunday July 20th from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day. Beginners and advanced adult kayakers will paddle the 30 miles along the beautiful Walloon Lake shoreline and raise much needed dollars for scholarships for children to attend Camp Daggett Adventure Center programs. St. Francis Xavier 8th grade families will be hosting parking in the School/Church parking lot again this year (by donation) on Friday of Sidewalk Sales. With much of the on-street parking occupied with tents and such guests may appreciate knowing this option is available. If possible, please post this info on the "more information" link on the Chamber's website and anywhere else you feel is appropriate. Proceeds go to help support the graduating class's group trip.

Crooked Tree Arts center is now accepting applications for the upcoming Juried Fine Arts Exhibition. This exhibition has become a hallmark to showcase artists from across the state of Michigan. The exhibition is open to all Michigan artists and to members of the Crooked Tree Arts Center who are 18 years or older. Entry dates are from June 1st - July 31st. The exhibition will be presented in the Ermy B. & Gordon B. Bonfield Gallery from September 20th through November 15thThe work submitted may be in all media types except for work based primarily on photography. The 6th annual Golf Fore Manna Charity Event will take place Thursday, September 4, on the Moor Course at the Country Club of Boyne, Boyne Highlands. The event includes 18 holes of championship golf, lunch from Stafford's Pier, dinner at the Country Club of Boyne, prizes, live and silent auction. There are sponsorship opportunities available. The Manna Food Project is a nonprofit food bank and pantry, with a food rescue program, and Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Manna serves more than 49,000 families in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. Voices Without Borders will presenting its 5th international choir & dance festival from July 15th-20th. The producers of the festival are working very hard to find host families for the visiting choir participants from several countries. Home stays allow the visitors to get to know how an American family lives and functions. Families who are willing to host the youth participants need to take two or more members so the visitors can turn to each other for support when necessary. Hosting responsibilities include providing lodging, most meals, and transportation to and from festival events. Char-Em United Way Thanks Donors, Celebrates Success, & Announces John Newton Award Winners! Char-Em United Way Campaign was capped off with a Celebration! Thanks to Odawa Casino for again hosting our breakfast celebration which took place on June 12th. The event is the culmination of our annual fundraising campaign and provides a public venue for thanking donors, recognizing volunteers, and announcing our John Newton Award winners. Anora O'Connor, Castle Farm General Manager received the John Newton Community Excellence Award and Jan Mancinelli, Executive Director for the Women's Resource Center received the John Newton Individual Excellence Award. The Women's Resource Center of Northern Michigan (WRCNM) is seeking Tribute award nominations to honor extraordinary women in northern Michigan for their personal accomplishments, commitment to strengthening the community and improving the lives of those who live here.  Honorees are selected from nominations submitted by the community-at-large, and reviewed by a selection committee also comprised of community members.  Nomination deadline is Friday, September 5th. The WRCNM, and title sponsor The Bank of Northern Michigan, will hold the Tribute awards celebration at Stafford's Perry Hotel in Petoskey at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, November 6th.
