Stance on Personal Property Tax

CHAMBER URGES YES VOTE ON PROPOSAL 1

The Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce and its partners in the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance have endorsed a 'yes' vote for Proposal 1 on the Aug. 5th Primary Ballot.  Proposal 1 will eliminate the personal property tax for small businesses in Michigan and eventually in all Michigan companies.  Revenues will be replaced with the more stable and equitable use tax.  The majority of the new funding will come from expiring business tax credits.  The chamber sees the personal property tax on businesses as antiquated and complicated.  They also see it as a double tax on property that never goes away even as that equipment depreciates.  However, before endorsing the ballot proposal, the PRCC waited for reassurance that local units of government would see a guaranteed replacement of 100% of the estimated revenue lost.  That guarantee is in place, so the PRCC and Alliance urge you and your employees to vote "Yes" for Proposal 1 on the Aug. 5th primary ballot.
