Spring Birding Trip with LTC and Petoskey Audubon on Saturday, June 7 from 8-10 a.m. at Ransom Nature Preserve, Maple Grove Road, Charlevoix. The preserve offers a delightful mixture of habitats, which allows it to support a wide diversity of bird species. Scarlet Tanagers and Indigo Buntings have been regular in the past. Great-crested Flycatcher nested at this location last summer. Rose-breasted grosbeak, various woodpeckers, various sparrows and even some warblers are all possibilities. Plan to spend approximately two hours hiking through meadow, woods, and forest edge trails. Darrell Lawson, current president of the PRAS, will lead the trip and help to both locate birds and explain their behavior. Horticulturist to speak at Castle Farms. Nationally renowned horticulturist Rob McCartney visits Castle Farms on Tuesday, June 10th at 7:00 pm to share his expertise on "When Plants aren't Enough: Art, Ornaments and Garden Structures". McCartney has extensive experience in the design, display and care of formal gardens, woodlands, children's gardens, ponds and streams. Antique Wedding Gown and Quilt Display. Linda Mueller, owner of Castle Farms, married her husband Richard in 1969 in a wedding gown stitched by her mother, Eva. Linda's gown (plus Eva's, too) will be showcased along with 25 other gowns during the Castle's 5th Annual Antique Wedding Gown and Quilt Display June 17-24. Other dresses date back as early as 1758, then from 1800 each consecutive decade through present day. Included with the display are 20 antique quilts. The earliest, a Baltimore Quilt, dates back to 1800. The Castle's Antique Wedding Gown and Quilt Display can be viewed by visitors taking a historic self-guided tour. North Central Michigan College's nursing and allied health faculty will hold information sessions on Wednesday, June 18th and August 6th at 4 p.m. to explain the process for admission into the college's highly competitive nursing and allied health career programs. The sessions will be in Room 347 of the college's Health Education and Science Center on the Petoskey campus. Anyone planning to apply for the nursing or allied health programs is strongly encouraged to attend one of these informational sessions. The information on prerequisites will be particularly important for those applying for the fall 2015 program.

The Little Traverse Association of Home Builders (LTAHB) recently announced its annual awards for distinguished service. Associate of the Year award was Geri Nelson of DTE Energy. Patrice and Doug Carlson of DWS Builders were the Builder of the Year and received top honors from the 2014 Northern Michigan Home Show. Jeff Grantham of Grantham Building and Remodeling received the association's President's Award. Robin Hissong Berry of Pro Build received the Dick Crawford Award. Tom Adams of Birchwood Construction received the Clyde Whaley Award. President Scott Gwizdala of Pro Build presented a Past Presidents Award to Arlene McKinney of Harbor/Brenn Insurance for her past service in 2013.
