It's Official, we've changed the name of Leo's Sports Bar, to Leo's Neighborhood Tavern!

It's been in the works all winter, but last week Richard received the permission from the City Sign Committee to alter our Historical Neon Sign! We 'took back' the original name Richards' father Leo had called his bar in 1938, Leo's Tavern.  We just inserted  'Neighborhood'.   We open at 2:00pm Monday - Friday and Noon on Saturday & Sunday.  Serving Our Signature Broiled Burgers, Brats & Hot Dogs til Midnight!  Our Fantastic staff is ready to welcome you to our Neighborhood, the Tavern on Mitchell Street!

Former PRCC employee Donna Kujat will be signing copies of her new novel "Hope For All Seasons" tonight, May 16 at the Terrace Inn and 1911 Restaurant in Bay View. Writing under the pen name Donna Robbins, Donna is donating $5.00 of each $20.00 book sold to A Matter of Honor (AMOH), as they build awareness of the tragic affects on all of us when a Veteran takes their life.  And currently that is almost 24 Veterans each day, occurring every 65 minutes of every day.  Donna will be signing copies of her romance/mystery book from 5:30 - 8:00pm.

 

Ottawa's Family to Family Sale is Saturday, May 17th 9am-2pm. Ottawa Elementary's third annual Family to Family sale is just around the corner. Kids clothes, toys, household & food items will be available.  This sale will be open to the public and admission is free.  The Ottawa Elementary Student Council is also hosting a car wash from 9am-2pm on Saturday, May 17th.  Get your car ready for spring & support our schools.

 

Trillium Walk at Goodhart Farms Preserve, Emmet Co. Saturday, May 17 10am-noon. Join botanist and LTC volunteer Andy Reyburn on this spring hike to see the exquisite blankets of Trillium unique to northern Michigan. The woods and trails of Goodhart Farms offer outstanding wildflowers this time of year, and hopefully we will hit the peak Trillium bloom. Meet at the Lone Rock Road parking lot. Stop by the Grain Train Saturday May 17th from 10 am - 2 pm for a Co-op Kid Approved tasting event. We will have tasty kid-friendly samples though out the store for kids try and vote on. We will also have Boom Chicka Pop popcorn seeds to grow at home! Tastings taking place in both Petoskey and Boyne City locations. Come and join the fun, plant a seed and bring a friend or two!

 

Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is looking for volunteers to help with Landscaping our newest Habitat Home in Pellston, for a family of 5. Join us May, 17th from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Volunteers will help prepare the yard for sidewalks, plant plants, and spread seed. You must register before coming out to the jobsite. Leadership Little Traverse Class of 2014 in partnership with Angel Ambassadors invites you to join us May 17th at Pennsylvania Park for Operation Festival of Freedom. This event is a day to celebrate the basic freedom of childhood, an often overlooked freedom derived of our service men, women and their families. Please join us for a small program at 10:30 a.m. followed by a carnival type event with face painters, a moon bounce, and M.R.E. tasting. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase benefiting the Angel Ambassadors mission, helping Veterans in need, simply because they care.

 

Support Camp Daggett with Great Family Activities. Camp Daggett invites the public to participate in wonderful events this spring and summer, supporting scholarships for youth at camp and in the Adventure Center. First up, the public is invited to Grandpa Shorter's Gifts, 301 E. Lake Street in Petoskey, on Saturday, May 17 from 9am to 7pm for a shopping day to benefit Camp Daggett. A group of mature kayak enthusiasts is gearing up for another season of paddling the waters of Northern Michigan. They welcome other interested kayakers to join them at an organizational meeting to be held at the Petoskey Friendship Center, 1322 Anderson Rd, at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21. In the past the group has met to paddle on lakes and rivers throughout the area. Those involved are age 55 and over, and their skill levels range from beginner to experienced. McGulpin Point Lighthouse reopens for the 2014 season on Friday, May 23 Visit one of Emmet County's most important historic sites  May til October; always free admission Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily throughout the summer. Emmet County owns and operates McGulpin Point, which protected shipping on the Straits of Mackinac against storms, fog and rocks between 1869 and 1906.  The address is 500 Headlands Road, Mackinaw City, Michigan, 49701. SOMMERSET POINT YACHT CLUB & MARINA. We've all been waiting for this summer to finally start, join the Memorial weekend celebration at Sommerset Point with a Bar-b-que and live music. Local Appreciation Day at Castle Farms. Castle Farms is opening its gates on Monday, Memorial Day, May 26th, for FREE self-guided tours. Boyne Mountain's 5th Annual Dirty Dog Dash, a 3.1 mile obstacle race, returns on Saturday, June 7, with an all-new course and challenges.  And you can get muddy for a good cause.  A portion of each entry fee supports Wounded Warrior Project with a mission of honoring and empowering wounded warriors. Preregistration is open now at boynemountain.com with reduced rates through June 1.  Individual entry is currently $50, four-person wolf packs are $200, and ten-person packs are $450.  Participants can also register the day of the event. McLaren Northern Michigan and Local Dermatology practice offers Skin Cancer screening on Wednesday, June 18. Dermatology Associates of Northern Michigan will host the screening from 4-5:30 p.m. at 4170 Cedar Bluff Drive in Petoskey. This is a rapid screening to visually inspect your skin. If indicated, you may need to see your physician for a complete skin care examination. Individuals who have not had a screening of an area of concern on the skin during the last two years are eligible for this skin cancer screening. Those people who are currently being treated by a dermatologist are not eligible to participate in the screening. There is no charge for the screening, but pre-registration is required by calling (800) 248-6777.

 

United Way, Habitat and RSVP invite you to the 1st Annual Day of Action Volunteer Fair on June 21st. Emmet County likes to help kick off the summer tourism/resort season with a boost for local businesses, with free advertising on the digital display at the baggage claim at Pellston Regional Airport. Any Emmet County business is welcome to participate. We call this our annual Boost for Business for Emmet County! Here's how it works: For the month of June, Emmet County will run your business's digital ad on the large digital display at baggage claim, 24 hours a day, every day, at no cost. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce the winners of the of 2014 Robert O. Davis Emerging Artist Competition. Marion Watson, pianist, was the winner, and Coral Brantley, pianist, the runner-up. Both Marion and Coral are from Petoskey, and are students of Michelle Mitchum.  In addition to receiving cash awards, each winner are given a performance opportunity with the orchestra or on a Sunday Series recital.  Congratulations to both of these emerging artists! The competition is open to instrumental and vocal students age 14-19, who reside in the Lower Peninsula, north of the 45th parallel. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra produces live orchestral performances that provide entertainment for Northern Michigan.  For more information about the orchestra, go to www.glcorchestra.org.

 

Instant Wine Cellar Thank You! We had a good turnout for the event with over 320 people attending.   The Instant Wine Cellar raised more than $6,400 to help support our Volunteer Connections program.  This program is a virtual volunteer center and any community member can find opportunities searchable by their area if interest, local community, or a local organization they love from the hundreds of needs listed. National Craft & Home Decor Retailer Prepares for the Opening of its New Store. Hobby Lobby Stores is set to open a new store in Petoskey. Construction and renovations have begun on this 42,000 square-foot building formerly occupied by Glen's Market, located at Spring Street & Sheridan Road.This is Hobby Lobby's 20th location in Michigan, which is projected to open at the end of June. The location will bring about 35 - 50 jobs to the community paying $15 per hour for full time and $10 per hour for part-time associates.
