Professional education and outreach to hold ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for new space

Kansas State University's Polytechnic Campus is celebrating the grand opening of its Outreach Center with a purple ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, on the north corridor of campus on Scanlan Avenue. Faculty, staff, students and the public are encouraged to attend.

The Outreach Center is home to Kansas State Polytechnic's professional education and outreach department, which serves both the Salina community and industry partners. Formerly accommodating the campus's student activities center, the newly renovated space contains a training classroom with high-definition cameras and microphones to allow for hybrid class locations; a testing center, including serving as an official FAA testing center; and offices for professional education and outreach.

The ceremony will include comments from Danielle Brown, director of the professional education and outreach department, and Joe Harrison, director of facilities. After the ribbon is cut, guests are invited to tour the contemporary space.

For questions about the Outreach Center and the upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremony, contact Kirsten Zoller, event coordinator for professional education and outreach, at 785-826-7182 or [email protected].
First Civic Luncheon Lecture of fall semester kicks off Thursday
There can be understanding in conflict, but only if both sides know how to communicate. In a culture where argument and polarization seem to be a common thread in disagreements, Kansas State Polytechnic's first Civic Luncheon Lecture of the fall semester will focus on the value of cultivating diplomatic and deliberative dialogue.

"Discussion Time is Here: Understanding and Addressing Public Problems, Then and Now" will be presented at noon Thursday, Sept. 8, in the College Center conference room. Guests may bring their lunch to the event or buy a lunch from the campus's cafeteria.

Tim Shaffer, assistant professor of communication studies at Kansas State University and assistant director of the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy at K-State, will present on historical and contemporary examples of how deliberation can help higher education and community leaders sustain democracy and stimulate civic involvement. He also will discuss how communal engagement and respectful conversation can encourage people to seek and address issues versus heated exchange. Julie Rowe, academic advisor and career service counselor at Kansas State Polytechnic, will serve as moderator.

The Civic Luncheon Lecture Series is free and faculty, staff, students and the public are welcome. For more information on the series, contact Stephens at 785-819-6887 or [email protected].

Kansas State Polytechnic's 'Wildcat Welcome Weeks' an overwhelming success

Wildcat Welcome Weeks came to an end Sept. 2, wrapping up two weeks of activities and events on the Polytechnic Campus to help students get to know one another and create purple pride. The events, organized by the campus student life team as well as campus clubs and organizations, included mud volleyball, a movie night, an ice cream social, color battle, golf, paintball and a faculty/staff versus students kickball game, among other things.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

I really appreciate all of the time and creativity that went into planning these fun events for students. We all know how important it is for this campus to develop a sense family and belonging, especially for students, so we can thrive. Thank you to everyone involved.
