Calling student clubs for participation in Candy Canes and Airplanes
Candy Canes and Airplanes will be held Saturday, December 5 at the Salina Airport. This is a community event sponsored by K-State Salina and the Salina Airport Authority. Families from the community will be in attendance to see santa, look at aircraft, and see our K-State student clubs. Last year, approximately 1,000 people attended! Student groups are invited to submit a proposal to host a booth at Candy Canes and Airplanes. Your club can use this as a fundraiser or for volunteer hours.

If your club is interested please contact Kirsten Zoller, events coordinator, at [email protected] or stop by the construction lab by November 6 to pick up a submission form.
"Trick-or-treat so others can eat" food drive
The Upward Bound Program would like to invite all faculty and staff to participate in our "Trick-or-Treat So Others Can Eat" event. You are welcome to bring your children to Trick-or-Treat alongside our students, staff, and volunteers while they also Trick-or-Treat for non-perishable food items and/or canned goods. All of our students will be dressed in their costumes as well as some staff and volunteers, so we welcome you and your children to wear your costume as well.

The event will be held on October 31, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

High school students participating in the Kansas State University Salina Upward Bound Program will be going door to door in the Salina neighborhoods asking for non-perishable food items and/or canned goods instead of traditional candy. These items will be donated to the Salina Emergency Food Bank. The Upward Bound students and staff are hoping to make "Trick-or Treat So Others Can Eat" a successful event this year.
Please note: The Upward Bound Program will be accepting donations in front of the Ohio Street and Planet Avenue Dillon's grocery store.

For more Information please contact Monshonda Booker, Upward Bound director, at [email protected] or 785-826-2988.

Screening of "Poor Kids"
What is life really like for children worried about their next meal and a place to call home?

The social work wildcats club and Circles of the Heartland are hosting a screening of "Poor Kids", a PBS Frontline documentary.
The event will take place October 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Tech Center classroom 103 and will be open to everyone to attend.

In the documentary, Frontline travels to the Quad Cities, a great American crossroads along the border of Iowa and Illinois, to explore the lives of children living in the suburbs of the nation's heartland and growing up poor. Told from the point of view of the children themselves, this one-hour documentary offers a unique perspective on the nation's flagging economy and the impact of unemployment, foreclosure and financial distress as seen through the eyes of the children affected. The film is an unflinching look at what poverty means to children in America and our country's future.

Following the screening will be a panel discussion featuring voices of child poverty in Saline County and what we can do to solve the issues. Participants are encouraged to bring paper good products (plates, napkins, silverware, cups, etc) to benefit Circles of the Heartland.

If you have any questions, please contact Rubi Torres, club president, at [email protected] or 785-822-7364.

Student Governing Association (SGA) attends national leadership conference
This past weekend, eight  members of our Student Governing Association traveled to St. Louis for their National Leadership Conference. Throughout the weekend, they were able to share ideas with other college governing groups, attend workshops, and to make connections with other student leaders.

Thanks for representing that purple pride!

K-State Salina featured in American Bonanza Society magazine
K-State Salina Aviation was featured on the cover of American Bonanza Society magazine! The October issue also includes a 7-page spread on the professional pilot program.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. K-State Salina's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.
