There is still time left to help out K-State Salina in the Match Madness initiative. Until 7:00 p.m. on March 10, anyone can visit Martinelli's Little Italy on Santa Fe and donate to help enhance the undergraduate research showcase. Student Life Center lettering is added to building

In an effort to clarify any confusion with the building name, new lettering has replaced the Recreation Center sign. According to official construction records and the Kansas Board of Regents, the facility is known as the Student Life Center.

Though many already call it the Student Life Center, or SLC, many others refer to it as the Recreation Center, or Rec Center. This has caused confusion with off campus guests that are visiting the building. It also sends a mixed message to potential students and industry partners that come to campus.

In order to keep a consistent message, the new letters were added to the building and communications coordinator, Julee Cobb, is asking everyone to only refer to it as the Student Life Center.

With everyone's help, there shouldn't be any more confusion or questions about the building's name. For more information, contact Cobb at [email protected] or 826-2642.
Updated wireless access on campus

Wireless access on the Salina campus will be changing over spring break, effective March 16.  In order to provide a more seamless wireless experience between the Manhattan and Salina campuses, the "KSU Wireless" and "KSU Guest" networks will replace Salina's already existing "K-State.wpa2" and "K-State.guest" wireless connections. Additionally, there will be a "KSU Housing" secure connection available in Schilling and Harbin Hall for on campus residents.

For more information about how to connect to the new wireless networks, please click here.

If you have any questions, please contact Matt Janzen in information services, at [email protected]

K-State Salina hosts 'Poverty Simulation'

In an effort to bring awareness to real world poverty and the struggles families go through to make ends meet, K-State Salina's family studies and human services department is collaborating with Circles of the Heartland to conduct a Poverty Simulation. On March 28, students, faculty and the community are invited to attend and participate in the demonstration, which runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the College Center conference room.

The poverty simulation will be an intensive experiential workshop in which participants role play by either being a part of a low-income family or the representative of a service/community agency. The simulation is followed by a debriefing in which the participants can discuss their experiences and observations from various perspectives. The intended result is to give attendees an increased understanding of the issues low-income individuals and families must struggle with every day to make ends meet.

There is also a need for volunteers to be the townspeople, which requires a time commitment from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Consumer Credit Counseling, K-State Salina and St. Francis Community Services are sponsoring the event.

Students are free with their school ID and faculty and staff are $20. You can register by filling out the form attached below or by contacting Shelly Martin, Circles of the Heartland coordinator, or Rodney Denholm, Circles of the Heartland coach, at 785-827-6731.

Waldron Middle School visits K-State Salina

K-State Salina welcomed Waldron Middle School from Waldron, Arkansas last week to campus for a day and a half visit. While the students were here, they got to take a first hand look at the UAS and engineering technology departments. The students got to experiment with robotics, learn about the 3D printer and take part in flight demonstrations of unmanned aircraft.

This is the second year that the school has sent students to campus to learn about our programs. The visit was initiated by one of Waldron's science teachers who recognized K-State Salina as a leader in education of unmanned aircraft systems.

For more information on the visit, contact Dixie Schierlman, associate dean of student life, at [email protected]

K-State Salina featured in the spring edition of "K-Stater" magazine
Scattered around campus are copies of the spring edition of the "K-Stater" magazine that features our campus. K-State Salina has a three page spread that highlights three examples of research that the school is exploring as well as honors the flight team's accomplishments.

Research is a key initiative for K-State, as the university wants to be recognized as a Top 50 public research institution by 2025. In the first article, associate professors of social work, Jennifer Davis and Sarah Pilgrim, outline their current study, "Military Service to Social Service." They noticed a spike in enrollment of veterans in social work programs specifically and wanted to explore how the military value system intersects with a social work value system.

The unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) program was also featured for their research collaboration with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, looking at two different procedures of collecting data with an unmanned aircraft. Our program's research could help with surveying the health of vegetation, Native American cultural sites and archeological digs.

The third research article focuses on professor Troy Harding's analysis of mobile web apps. After doing his own research, Harding turned his work into a class that started last spring.

Make sure to grab a copy of the "K-Stater" and read up on all of the exciting achievements K-State Salina has made over the past year. Refer to pages 21 and 75-77 for the stories.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. K-State Salina's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

High-Five to everyone involved with the Waldron Middle School visit!
A big thank you to all of the departments on campus that worked together to orchestrate the educational visit for the Waldron Middle School students. A lot of effort was put into making it a fun time for the students on campus. I am happy that they were able to get some hands-on experience with the unmanned aircraft systems and in the ET lab. We look forward to having more students on campus to learn about our great programs!Link
