K-State Salina is first entity in the country to receive statewide access for flight operations of small UAS
Kansas State University Salina has reached a national milestone in the unmanned aircraft systems industry, becoming the first entity in the country to receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, for statewide access during flight operations.

The university has received three Certificates of Authorization that will allow its unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, program to conduct research anywhere in the state on public property, or on private property with landowner permission.

"These new authorizations are yet another example of how K-State Salina is truly a leader in unmanned aircraft systems," said Kurt Carraway, K-State Salina's UAS flight operations manager. "Our statewide access will allow us to continue to provide practical applications of technology to our students and will further develop our research abilities for the university, the FAA and our industry partners."

K-State Salina's UAS program will use the three new Certificates of Authorization, or COAs, primarily to conduct research on unmanned aircraft systems operating requirements for remote sensing in agriculture and emergency response. The certificates are effective for two years, giving the university's UAS program a flexibility and immediacy in collecting research data, specifically in agriculture remote sensing, when conditions promptly change.

Remembering Charlie Sojka
One of K-State Salina's deeply admired faculty members, Charlie Sojka, will be honored on Friday, Feb. 27 in a campus memorial. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the gathering, which starts at 2:00 p.m. in the College Center conference room.

Last November, the university unexpectedly lost Charlie to an airplane accident when he was visiting family in Missouri. Charlie has left a legacy on our campus, especially in the aviation department where he was the director of maintenance. Charlie had been with K-State Salina for more than 10 years.

Charlie's memorial will feature stories and memories of him told by coworkers, friends and family. If you would like to share a memory during the gathering or would like to send a written memory, please contact Kirsten Zoller, events coordinator, at [email protected] by February 26.

Don't feed the campus critters

In an effort to control an increasing animal problem on campus, K-State Salina security has asked that you not feed the wild animals, feral cats, and other rodents roaming around. Campus security says wild animals will eat the same food that people are placing out for the cats, and are now becoming more comfortable being around humans.

There have been several sightings of nocturnal animals, such as skunks, that have been seen during daylight, which is an indication they could be sick with an illness such as rabies.

For your safety and the safety of others please do not feed or approach the wild animals that live near campus. If you have any questions, please contact Rick Honeycutt, police sergeant, at [email protected]

High-five to K-State Proud!
A high five to all of those who participated in the K-State Proud campaign on campus last Thursday. K-State Proud is an organization that was created by students on the Manhattan campus to financially help students on all campuses. In the past years, K-State Proud has given assistance to 25 Salina students.

The two booths that were set up last week collected more than $1,000 in donations for the cause. A special thank you to our student ambassadors, Garett Ludlum and Ian Barnhart, who spearheaded the effort on our campus. Great work in helping our students!

If you still wish to support and purchase a K-State Proud shirt, please contact Amy Cole, director of development, at [email protected].
