2015 Alumni Fellow announced

The Alumni Fellow award is a prestigious honor given to an alumnus who has distinguished him- or herself in their career field. When an Alumni Fellow is chosen, they return to campus to be recognized for their accomplishments as well as impart their expertise and life experiences to students.

K-State Salina has officially announced Beverly C. Gatton as the 2015 Alumni Fellow. Gatton is the twenty-third fellow for campus, graduating in 1986 with an associate's degree in computer technology. She earned her degree while the campus was known as Kansas Technical Institute and has since been connected to K-State Salina by teaching night classes in applied business software for six years. In addition, she has proudly served on the K-State Salina Computer Systems Technology Advisory Board since 2003. Gatton also holds a bachelor's degree in business and public administration from the University of Texas at Dallas and a master's degree in management of information systems from Friends University in Wichita.

Gatton is currently an information technology project manager for Fidelity Information Services in Lenexa, Kansas. FIS is a global provider of technology assistance to the financial services industry and Gatton oversees banking software implementation projects across the United States.

Gatton will be recognized on campus April 16 and 17. This will provide opportunities to meet, congratulate and network with her.

If you have any questions, please contact Julee Cobb, communications and alumni coordinator, at julee@ksu.edu.

This month's Civic Luncheon Lecture covers important topic facing college campuses

Sexual assault on college campuses and in personal relationships will be the topic of the latest Civic Luncheon Lecture Series at Kansas State University Salina.

"What Defines Sexual Violence and Rape?" will be presented at noon Thursday, Feb. 12, at K-State Salina's College Center conference room. The gathering will feature three expert panelists: Amanda Olivier, sexual assault advocate from the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas; Glen Stovall, licensed specialist clinical social worker with Wellspring Psychotherapy; and Shannon Garretson, educational director of the Salina Community Theatre and registered drama therapist. Joel Matthews, a K-State Salina psychology instructor, will serve as the moderator.

The panel plans to cover the topics of consent, victim blaming and being an active bystander, while also addressing collegiate sexual assaults, specifically male accountability. The presentation aims to educate the audience and assist them in starting a dialogue about the difficult subject matter.

"Talking about sexual violence is critical to the movement to end violence," Olivier said. "Open conversations allow the stigma that has always accompanied sexual violence to begin to dissipate. My hope is that it will be like any 'normal' conversation."

The first Civic Luncheon Lecture Series of the 2015 spring semester is free and the public is invited. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch or purchase their lunch at the K-State Café and then bring their tray into the conference room.

For more information on the series, contact Stephens at 785-819-6887 or gregs@k-state.edu.

Speed bumps hope to create a safe campus environment

You may have noticed a few speed bumps recently placed around the campus roads. K-State Salina is hoping to make the campus a safer place for all drivers and pedestrians with these installations.

When approaching a speed bump, make sure to slow down when traveling over it. Do not try to go around the speed bump because that violates the Kansas State Statue 8-1507 and can result in a traffic citation costing $75 and a court fee costing $108.

For questions about these official traffic control devices, contact campus police sergeant Rick Honeycutt at 785-826-2903.
K-State Salina represents at aviation roundtable

In an effort to address future challenges that lie ahead for Kansas aviation, senators Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts hosted an aviation roundtable on the K-State Salina campus Monday morning. The roundtable was an open forum of discussion in which numerous representatives of Kansas airports, the FAA and AAAE came together to talk about the industry.

Among the participants of the roundtable were K-State Salina CEO and dean, Verna Fitzsimmons, and associate dean of research, Kurt Barnhart. They provided insight to the panel about the training K-State Salina offers in the UAS program and gave insightful information about FAA regulations.

Other topics addressed were FAA reauthorization, implementing rules for commercial UAS use, the Federal Contact Tower Program, Essential Air Service benefits, passenger facility charges and how budget cuts have a negative impact on FAA aviation programs. The senators made suggestions, explained the importance of each of the topics and how they plan to address those issues in Congress.

For further questions about the roundtable, contact Kurt Barnhart, associate dean of research, at kurtb@ksu.edu.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. K-State Salina's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

High-five to Kate Otto!
A big high-five goes out to Kate Otto in the library for starting a walk-in math tutoring program as an outlet for students to get help in their math classes! We are proud to offer free peer tutoring on campus to any student and all they have to do is go online to schedule an appointment. This walk-in tutoring also allows for last minute questions to be asked and a more flexible schedule for students to come in and out as they need. I look forward to seeing the success of this new addition to our peer tutoring program, and the academic success of all students using the service. Kate, thank you for all the hard work in helping students be successful in their studies!
