Dr. Kathleen Liang to conduct workshop on USDA grant process

Dr. Kathleen Liang will be on campus to conduct a workshop for faculty and community members on Feb. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Life Center, examining how to create a successful USDA grant. The workshop will look at examples of different strategies used in proposals by integrating research, teaching and outreach through a multidisciplinary approach. She will also be speaking in Dr. Siny Joseph's economic classes on Feb. 3.

Dr. Kathleen Liang is a professor at the University of Vermont with interests in local food sustainability and small business initiatives. She received her bachelor's degree from National Taiwan University, and received both her master's and doctorette degrees from Purdue University.

Liang has designed, developed, and implemented the first Entrepreneurship program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in the United States, served in numerous leadership positions in more than 10 national organizations, received more than 35 awards in teaching, and has served as a speaker for 40 national as well as international events. In addition, she has published five books and 200 peer-reviewed articles relating to entrepreneurship, agriculture, and regional food systems all of which has helped her receive more than five million dollars in grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct research in her studies.

K-State Salina named one of seven wonders of Salina

K-State Salina is once again named a community wonder!

This past month, third graders at Coronado Elementary school visited the campus and decided to choose K-State Salina as one of seven wonders in the city. The decision was made after a tour was given to the third graders where they got to explore career paths in aviation and engineering. The students enjoyed a hands-on learning experience, took home K-State gear and constructed model airplanes.

This is the second year K-State Salina has been given this award. The university is honored by the choice as it strives to engage the Salina community through education and service.

For further information or more questions, contact Dixie Schierlman, associate dean of student life at dixies@k-state.edu.

K-State Olathe held their first Teen Women in Science and Technology (TWIST) event for high school girls, giving them the opportunity to explore careers in those fields.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. K-State Salina's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

Congratulations TWIST and Science Olympiad!
This January, K-State Salina hosted both the Teen Women in Science and Technology (TWIST) and Science Olympiad events. TWIST celebrated its 22nd year on campus encouraging high school girls in the career fields of science and technology. More than 200 girls attended and it provided insightful information that will help them in their higher education decision.

Science Olympiad has been held on the K-State Salina campus for almost 20 years. The competition is for surrounding middle schools and high schools who send their best and brightest to participate in various math, engineering and science events. It was so much fun to see what the kids had created and to see them bringing science to life.

Congratulations to all event volunteers for having another successful year, and thank you for your hard working in the planning process.
Thank you space committee!

High-Five to the ad hoc space committee: Raju Dandu, Mindy Markham, Barney King, Alyson Romé Don Von Bergen, Bill Bochte, Rene Doherty, Les Kinsler, Bill Genereux, Mark Jackson, Steven Ley, Mark Blanks, Bill Chestnut and Alysia Starkey for taking the space request information provided by each program and unit area, and coming up with some great ideas on how to better utilize the space we have. Some ideas include providing collaborative spaces, a much needed expansion of some areas and a contraction of not used spaces, all while keeping student success in mind.  With this kind of work, we will continue to improve on the great foundation that this campus has while providing critical education for our future professionals. Thank you to everyone on the committee for all of your hard work and insight!
