Ackerman shares the story of Marymount's past
Language arts professor, Pat Ackerman, will be K-State Salina's newest published author when her first book, "Marymount College of Kansas: A History" is released Nov. 18.

The book highlights the significance of the institution to Kansas as it was the first all-female college in the state. The university opened its doors in 1922 after the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia, Kan. wanted to expand their boarding school and further the education of women.

Ackerman is a 1978 alumna of Marymount College. While getting her bachelor's degree, she says she didn't realize the in-depth history of the school, and after learning some interesting information from the property's current owners, she felt it needed to be shared. Marymount College closed its doors in 1989, and the Mahrs family now make it their home.

Ackerman will be giving presentations about the history and signing her book; the schedule below highlights the stops on her tour:
* Saturday, Nov 15 | 2-4 p.m. | mezzanine of the former Marymount College administration building in recognition of "Marymount Day"
* Saturday, Nov 18 | official book release date | online and in retail stores
* Saturday, Nov 22 | 2-4 p.m. | Smoky Hill Museum, Salina, KS
* Tuesday, Dec 2 | 6-8 p.m. | Rivendell Bookstore, Abilene, KS
* Saturday, Dec 6 | 4-8 p.m. | St. Andrew's Church, Abilene, KS
* Sunday, Dec 7 | 1-7 p.m. | St. Andrew's Church, Abilene, KS
* Saturday, Dec 13 | 2-4 p.m. | Books-A-Million, Salina Central Mall, Salina, KS

Christmas lights donations
The Upward Bound Program at K-State Salina is in search of donations of white Christmas lights. The lights would be used to decorate a float for the annual Parade of Lights celebration in downtown Salina.

The Upward Bound students will decorate the float with the Christmas lights and other materials, and then will ride on the float that evening in the parade. Volunteers for the event are always welcome.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated!  Even loaners are welcome - if properly marked, the program can return them to you the week after the parade (11/22/2014).  They can pick them up, or you may drop off at K-State Salina, Science Center, Room 104.

If you have any questions or would like to help donate, please contact Dawn Smith, senior administrative assistant for UpWard Bound, at [email protected]

Family first

On Oct. 30, tragedy struck the Flight Safety International facility in Wichita, KS when a Beechcraft King Air crashed into the roof of the building killing four people and injuring five others.

One of those involved in the incident is K-State Salina grad, Scott Mans, who is a 2007 alumnus of the professional pilot program. Scott was sent to the hospital with a broken hip and burns to hands, arms and legs, according to news coverage.

To show support for a member of our Wildcat family, K-State Salina will be sending out a card to wish Scott a speedy and healthy recovery. If any faculty, staff or students would like to send well wishes to Scott, please see Julee Cobb, communications and alumni coordinator, in room 208D of the College Center to sign the card.in k

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. K-State Salina's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.
