Upward Bound Program on Campus This Summer
The Upward Bound Program Summer Institute 2014 started on June 1 and will take place throughout the month with approximately 52 scholars participating. During this time, the Upward Bound Program is also participating in the Summer Food Service Program for the scholars.
Four mentors are living in the dorms with the scholars - two returning from last year and two new to the program. This summer's mentors are: Libby Anderson, a graduate from Central Christian College with a Bachelor of Science in secondary education; Tyler Heavey who is completing his last requirements for the professional pilot program at K-State Salina; Nathan Selman, a K-State Salina student working on an accounting major; and Leah Halpain, a nursing major at Kansas Wesleyan University. The four mentors teach a leadership and development course to the scholars.
The Upward Bound Program also has six instructors teaching our scholars: Nathan Breeden is teaching foreign language with a plan to assist scholars in learning the Romance of Languages/Italian, and he teaches ESL at Salina South High School; Rosetta Wiles is teaching a combination of Career Exploration and Financial Management, and she currently teaches kindergarten at Southeast of Saline; Kristy Rodriguez is teaching math, and she teaches math, biology and chemistry as well as coach volleyball at Southeast of Saline Jr/Sr High School; Darcy Leech is teaching the ACT Preparation course, and she currently tutors for the Upward Bound Program and teaches English at Central High School; Chris Nay is teaching English, and she teaches 8th grade English at Lakewood Middle School; and Lori Young is teaching science, and she teaches Medical Investigations and PBD Science at Salina South High School.
Additionally, several K-State staff and community members will be joining us in the evenings for book club, individual counseling, motivational speeches and activities. If any K-State Salina faculty or staff would like to participate in the Upward Bound Program Summer Institute 2014, please call Monshonda Booker at 826-2988.

Harding wins K-State Salina's Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence
Kansas State University Salina computer systems technology professor, Troy Harding, has been named the recipient of the university's prestigious Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence for the 2013-2014 school year.
The honor was given to Harding after he was nominated by his faculty peers and letters of recommendation were written on his behalf to the deciding advisory committee. The award was established more than 30 years ago by the Marchbanks family to annually recognize a K-State Salina faculty member's commitment in the classroom, service to students, and overall merit as a teacher. Harding came to K-State Salina in 1999 and has been hard at work developing tomorrow's programmers, system administrators, data administrators, web developers and IT supporters.

The group also listened to an Alumni update from coordinator Julee Cobb and got the student's perspective from SGA president Ethan Delker. After lunch the group toured the campus, stopping at the Residence Halls, Welcome Center, UAS lab, aviation building and engineering technology lab.

If you wish to continue receiving weather alerts, you still have several options available: 1.) Subscribe directly to NOAA's RSS feeds (this is what Salina's automated email notification system used) See: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/rss/ 2.) Subscribe to any of various available email / SMS Weather Alert Services. NOAA maintains a list of providers of email and SMS alerts at http://www.weather.gov/subscribe 3.) Purchase a Weather Radio See: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/ 4.) Subscribe to CTIA's "Wireless Emergency Alerts" on a WEA-capable mobile device. See: http://www.ctia.org/your-wireless-life/consumer-tips/wireless-emergency-alerts Each of the above methods have advantages and disadvantages. Guidelines for Unclassified Employees' Leave Accruals

APA Style Change in English and Communication Courses
In response to requests from students and faculty, the K-State Salina English and communication faculty have made a decision to use APA documentation in writing and communication courses. This will be a change from the previous MLA style used in expository writing courses on the Salina campus.
Since K-State Salina degrees are in the sciences and social sciences, APA style reflects the professional expectations in these academic disciplines and will align with courses currently using APA style. The 6th Edition of the APA guide is available in the writing center and the library.

Thank you Discover Programmers!
Currently there are a lot of extra faces on campus and that's because of the amazing Discover Programs that are being offered this summer to kindergarten through 8th grade students at K-State Salina. I wanted to say thank you to the faculty, staff and students who have been involved with making each camp - aviation, sports and technology - a success for the participants.
