K-State Salina Flight Team Wins Loening Trophy For the first time in school history, the K-State Salina Flight Team was awarded the Loening Trophy at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's SAFECON National Championship, May 12-17, in Columbus, Ohio. The team finished 13th overall at the event. The trophy, called the oldest and most elite of all collegiate aviation awards, was created by aviation pioneer and inventor Grover Loening and is presented annually to the aviation program that demonstrates its overall excellence. The trophy was first presented - to Harvard University - in 1929, with aviation greats Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh among the judges. K-State Salina Provides Planes and CFI's for Flying Challenge For the second year in a row, K-State Salina partnered with the United Way of the Plains and Airbus Corporate Foundation to help out with the Flying Challenge. On May 9, the university flew eight planes down to Colonel James Jabara Airport where certified flight instructors (CFI's) from K-State Salina gave more than 60 children from Brooks Technology and Arts Magnet Middle School the ride of their life. All year long the children from Brooks Middle School have been working with mentors from Airbus and Wichita State University to improve their academic achievement in science, math, technology and engineering through field trips, tutoring and hands-on experiences. The Flying Challenge was the last event of the school year and designed, not only as a final educational component, but also as a reward for their hard work. Digital Media Students Place in Design Contest Digital media students Ben Crabtree, junior, and Khaled Abduljabbar, senior, submitted designs for the Engineering Education Service Center's poster contest in the engineering technology category. Crabtree placed first and Abduljabbar placed second. The design contest served a dual purpose for the students as they used it as part of a project in their Digital Media I class as well. Both estimated they spent about two weeks of class time perfecting their creations.

Social Work Instructors and Students Honored Right before commencement, social work candidates for graduation gathered for a lunch in the College Center Conference Room to be recognized for completing their practicum, and their field instructors were also honored. Congratulations!

Aviation Maintenance Program Teams Up with Price Induction K-State Salina has agreed to work with Price Induction to create a robust curriculum using the French company's new virtual engine test bench that simulates the DGEN 380 lightweight gas turbine engine. Price Induction has given the aviation department full use of the test bench for one year to generate an education model that could be used in other academic settings. K-State Salina also will evaluate the suitability of using this equipment on a longer-term basis in its aviation curriculum.
Though the virtual engine test bench will mainly be used by K-State Salina's aviation maintenance professors and students, program lead Stephen Ley, instructor of aviation maintenance, intends to integrate the developed curriculum into the aviation technology, professional pilot and engineering technology programs.

APA Style Change in English and Communication Courses
In response to requests from students and faculty, the K-State Salina English and communication faculty have made a decision to use APA documentation in writing and communication courses. This will be a change from the previous MLA style used in expository writing courses on the Salina campus.
Since K-State Salina degrees are in the sciences and social sciences, APA style reflects the professional expectations in these academic disciplines and will align with courses currently using APA style. The 6th Edition of the APA guide is available in the writing center and the library.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. K-State Salina's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

Congratulations Fred Guzek!
I want to say congratulations to faculty member Fred Guzek for being unanimously voted President Elect of Faculty Senate. This is the first time a Salina campus faculty member has been elected to this office. What an accomplishment!
|
Thank you to the faculty!
I want you all to know how much I appreciate you submitting grades ON TIME! A big thank you to Associate Dean David Delker on monitoring the missing grades and helping all of you to identify when a grade was missing.

Congratulations to the K-State Salina Flight Team!
Not only did the K-State Salina Flight Team place 13th at the NIFA SAFECON National Championship but they were also presented with the Loening Trophy for all-around aviation program excellence.
