K-State Salina Facebook Page Gets a New Look

If you haven't "LIKED" the K-State Salina Facebook page yet, you need to! This is the best way to keep connected with what's happening on campus.

There have been a few exciting changes recently to the university's social media sites to maximize the way followers are getting news and information. There is no longer a K-State Salina Alumni page; instead, no matter who you are (faculty, staff, alumni, students and community) you can get updated all in one place. Plus, a new banner of photos has been added so everyone can see the great learning and working environment on campus.

Campus Announcements
Upward Bound Program Welcomes Newest Staff Member

The Upward Bound Program is excited to announce that Dawn Smith is the new senior administrative assistant.  She joined the Upward Bound Program in mid-February.

Dawn has extensive experience in grant administration, database management and business administration support. In her spare time, Dawn enjoys spending time with her family, cooking and serving the Salina community as a volunteer to various organizations. Dawn participates in the YMCA Strong Kids fundraising campaign each year which helps with scholarships to Camp Wood and yearly memberships. The children of the Salina community greatly benefit from the campaign.

Dawn is currently in her second three-year term as a Salina Arts and Humanities Commissioner and was recently appointed as out-going "Past President" of the Board. She has been volunteering with the Smoky Hill River Festival for several years and she is currently on the Food Jury Committee that meets several times throughout the year to plan and prepare for the annual festival each June.

Please welcome Dawn to K-State Salina!

K-State Alerts Test

At about 1:30 p.m. March 4, Kansas State University will conduct an official test of K-State Alerts, the university's emergency notification system.

Emergency notification channels to be tested include: text messaging, automated phone calls, email to all K-State accounts, the university's home page, and the alert beacons in various buildings on the Manhattan, Olathe and Salina campuses. The tornado sirens with voice communications and public address system in the carillon atop Anderson Hall will also be tested.

K-State Alerts is used when a dangerous condition exists on any of K-State's campuses. The system is tested twice a year to ensure that it will work during an actual emergency.

During the test, text messages, automated phone calls and emails will be sent out. In addition, the wall-mounted alert beacons will emit a loud siren, flash strobe lights and provide digital scrolling text for two full minutes. They can't be turned off during the test.

To sign up to receive emergency notifications by text message or an automated phone call, students, faculty and staff with active K-State eIDs must enroll in K-State Alerts through the eProfile system. Eligible K-Staters can add contact information of parents, children and spouses when they sign up.

Those who already subscribe to text message and automated phone calls won't need to re-register, but officials recommend checking the Web site to make sure K-State has current phone numbers and email addresses.

Individuals who sign up for the service and don't receive the test alert or any other alerts should contact K-State's IT Help Desk at 800-865-6143 or 785-532-7772.

Want to win an iPad Mini?

The library needs your opinion about its services and spaces to better serve you! Please take the time to complete a short survey, which should take about 15 minutes of your time and can be found on the library's homepage here.

The survey is open from Feb. 17 to March 14. Please make sure you complete the survey before the deadline to be eligible for the drawing.

Planning for the K-State library's future, it is important that we understand the perceptions and expectations of our campus community so that we may provide the services and resources that K-Staters need to be successful. We greatly appreciate your help and thank you for your participation.

Nominations for the Marchbanks Memorial Award Due March 10th

The Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence is awarded every year to a K-State Salina faculty member who promotes excellence in education with a focus on the development of students' talents and abilities.  An excellent teacher should enhance each student's academic and personal development through involvement of students in active learning practices with innovative instructional methods, activities and assessment. Selection criteria include organization, content, relevance, academic rigor, knowledge, ability, enthusiasm, intellectual stimulation, creativity, innovation, fairness, flexibility, and other traits that make an outstanding teacher.

This letter is the first step in the nomination process, soliciting faculty, students and alumni to submit letters of nomination for regularly appointed full-time faculty members who exemplify the traits described above teaching in one of the programs offered at K-State Salina. The deadline to receive letters of recommendation in the Dean's office is Monday, March 10, 2014. Once nomination letters have been received, nominees will be notified and asked to submit a Teaching Vitae, a Philosophy of Teaching statement and various required letters of support.

The Marchbanks Award Selection Committee will review the nominees' materials, forward their recommendation to Dean Fitzsimmons and the award recipient will be announced in the spring.
HIGH-FIVE
A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. K-State Salina's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

Congratulations to Kathy Sanders
Congratulations Kathy on your new responsibilities as our Academic and Registrar Coordinator. I appreciate your service to this university and truly believe you'll enhance the academic experience for our students.
Thank You to David Hardman
