"Strategies to Support Father Involvement" Lecture by Big 12 Faculty Fellow Dr. Jessica Troilo Dr. Jessica Troilo will be speaking on "Strategies to Support Father Involvement" Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the K-State Salina College Center Conference Room.
Many fathers want to be more involved with their children, but don't know how. This may be especially true for fathers who live apart from their children. Individuals who work with families may be unsure how to support these fathers, as there is considerable diversity in why fathers are parenting apart from their children (e.g., divorce, single parenthood, military service). This talk will discuss specific strategies that can help support fathers who wish to maintain or improve their relationships with their children. Further, because the interactions between parent and child change as the child progresses through developmental periods, this talk will also include separate activities fathers can do with their children from birth through adolescence.
Dr. Jessica Troilo is an assistant professor at West Virginia University in the child development and family studies program. She graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. She earned her M.S. in Family Mediation in 2005 and her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Missouri in 2009. She has taught courses in marriage and family, family communication, contemporary topics in family studies, and family theory as well as a state-mandated divorced parenting education course. She currently lives with her husband, daughter and two black labs in Morgantown, West Virginia. |

AABI in Auburn
Drew Smith, Barney King and Kurt Barnhart attended and participated in the spring Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) conference held at Auburn University February 18-21. Beyond attending, Kurt was an invited panelist on the Industry/Educator Forum over flight data monitoring, Barney served as Board Member, and Drew was also an invited panelist on the Institutional Workshop on Safety Culture and Practices. K-State Salina achieved AABI accreditation in 2006 for the Professional Pilot program and is now considering expanding coverage for our other aviation programs as reaffirmation cycles come around. The southern cuisine and lower Alabama weather added pleasure and enjoyment to the trip.

K-State Alerts Test
At about 1:30 p.m. March 4, Kansas State University will conduct an official test of K-State Alerts, the university's emergency notification system.
Emergency notification channels to be tested include: text messaging, automated phone calls, email to all K-State accounts, the university's home page, and the alert beacons in various buildings on the Manhattan, Olathe and Salina campuses. The tornado sirens with voice communications and public address system in the carillon atop Anderson Hall will also be tested.
K-State Alerts is used when a dangerous condition exists on any of K-State's campuses. The system is tested twice a year to ensure that it will work during an actual emergency.
During the test, text messages, automated phone calls and emails will be sent out. In addition, the wall-mounted alert beacons will emit a loud siren, flash strobe lights and provide digital scrolling text for two full minutes. They can't be turned off during the test.
To sign up to receive emergency notifications by text message or an automated phone call, students, faculty and staff with active K-State eIDs must enroll in K-State Alerts through the eProfile system. Eligible K-Staters can add contact information of parents, children and spouses when they sign up.
Those who already subscribe to text message and automated phone calls won't need to re-register, but officials recommend checking the Web site to make sure K-State has current phone numbers and email addresses.
Individuals who sign up for the service and don't receive the test alert or any other alerts should contact K-State's IT Help Desk at 800-865-6143 or 785-532-7772.

Ergonomic Assessment
Are you sitting at your desk and something doesn't feel quite right? Well, you're in luck! On Tuesday, March 11, K-State Salina will host Lisa Hoffman, Safety Consultant, Industrial Safety and Health, Department of Labor on campus to perform "free" ergonomic checks. In order to maximize the ergonomic checks process, you will need to list the times you will be available in your office. (Example: 9:45 - 11:30 AM)
If it appears that there are more ergonomic checks than Lisa Hoffman can perform on Tuesday, she has volunteered to stay until Wednesday, March 12 to complete K-State Salina's ergonomic checks.
If you are interested in an ergonomic check of your office area, please e-mail Marlene Walker with: * Your Name * Building and Room No. * Times you are available on Tuesday, March 11 * Please have "ERGONOMIC CHECK" in your subject line
Please respond to walkerm@ksu.edu by 3:00 PM this Friday, February 28 so the date and times can be finalized.

Want to win an iPad Mini?
The library needs your opinion about its services and spaces to better serve you! Please take the time to complete a short survey, which should take about 15 minutes of your time and can be found on the library's homepage here.
The survey is open from Feb. 17 to March 14. Please make sure you complete the survey before the deadline to be eligible for the drawing.
Planning for the K-State library's future, it is important that we understand the perceptions and expectations of our campus community so that we may provide the services and resources that K-Staters need to be successful. We greatly appreciate your help and thank you for your participation.

Nominations for the Marchbanks Memorial Award Due March 10th
The Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence is awarded every year to a K-State Salina faculty member who promotes excellence in education with a focus on the development of students' talents and abilities. An excellent teacher should enhance each student's academic and personal development through involvement of students in active learning practices with innovative instructional methods, activities and assessment. Selection criteria include organization, content, relevance, academic rigor, knowledge, ability, enthusiasm, intellectual stimulation, creativity, innovation, fairness, flexibility, and other traits that make an outstanding teacher.
This letter is the first step in the nomination process, soliciting faculty, students and alumni to submit letters of nomination for regularly appointed full-time faculty members who exemplify the traits described above teaching in one of the programs offered at K-State Salina. The deadline to receive letters of recommendation in the Dean's office is Monday, March 10, 2014. Once nomination letters have been received, nominees will be notified and asked to submit a Teaching Vitae, a Philosophy of Teaching statement and various required letters of support.
The Marchbanks Award Selection Committee will review the nominees' materials, forward their recommendation to Dean Fitzsimmons and the award recipient will be announced in the spring.
