"Strategies to Support Father Involvement" Lecture by Big 12 Faculty Fellow Dr. Jessica Troilo
Dr. Jessica Troilo will be speaking on
"Strategies to Support Father Involvement" Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the K-State Salina College Center Conference Room.

Many fathers want to be more involved with their children, but don't know how. This may be especially true for fathers who live apart from their children.
Individuals who work with families may be unsure how to support these fathers, as there is considerable diversity in why fathers are parenting apart from their children (e.g., divorce, single parenthood, military service). This talk will discuss specific strategies that can help support fathers who wish to maintain or improve their relationships with their children. Further, because the interactions between parent and child change as the child progresses through developmental periods, this talk will also include separate activities fathers can do with their children from birth through adolescence.

Dr. Jessica Troilo is an assistant professor at West Virginia University in the child development and family studies program. She graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. She earned her M.S. in Family Mediation in 2005 and her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Missouri in 2009. She has taught courses in marriage and family, family communication, contemporary topics in family studies, and family theory as well as a state-mandated divorced parenting education course. She currently lives with her husband, daughter and two black labs in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Nominations for the Marchbanks Memorial Award Due March 10th

The Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence is awarded every year to a K-State Salina faculty member who promotes excellence in education with a focus on the development of students' talents and abilities.  An excellent teacher should enhance each student's academic and personal development through involvement of students in active learning practices with innovative instructional methods, activities and assessment. Selection criteria include organization, content, relevance, academic rigor, knowledge, ability, enthusiasm, intellectual stimulation, creativity, innovation, fairness, flexibility, and other traits that make an outstanding teacher.

This letter is the first step in the nomination process, soliciting faculty, students and alumni to submit letters of nomination for regularly appointed full-time faculty members who exemplify the traits described above teaching in one of the programs offered at K-State Salina. The deadline to receive letters of recommendation in the Dean's office is Monday, March 10, 2014. Once nomination letters have been received, nominees will be notified and asked to submit a Teaching Vitae, a Philosophy of Teaching statement and various required letters of support.

The Marchbanks Award Selection Committee will review the nominees' materials, forward their recommendation to Dean Fitzsimmons and the award recipient will be announced in the spring.
