MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER CONNIE HUDSON
SFA to Present Feasibility Study for Sports Complex
Sports Facilities Advisory (SFA), a nationally recognized sports and recreation consulting group, will present an in-depth feasibility study, economic impact analysis and financial forecast for the proposed Mobile County Soccer and Aquatic Center Complex on Tuesday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. during the Mobile County Commission Meeting in the Auditorium of Government Plaza. The SFA analysis will also provide a business development plan and market study data, important in investor recruitment for the project. Counsilman-Hunsaker, an aquatic design specialty group working with SFA, will also present the feasibility and market analysis for the proposed water park component. This should be an interesting and informative meeting. The public is invited to attend to learn more about the future of this exciting project opportunity for Mobile County.
May you and your family have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!
Warmest Regards,
Connie

MEMORIAL DAY HISTORY & EVENTS
|
Memorial Day, originally established on May 5, 1968 as Decoration Day by an organization of Civil War Union veterans known as the Grand Army of the Republic, began as a day set aside for the nation to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers with flowers. The date was originally observed each year on May 30th, presumably because of the abundance of flowers in bloom that time of year all over the country. After World War I, the day was expanded to honor fallen soldiers of all American wars and in 1967 Federal law declared "Memorial Day" the official name of the holiday. On June 28, 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which was intended to create three-day weekends from official national holidays; therefore, in 1971 when Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, the observance of Memorial Day changed from May 30th to the last Monday in May.
Unlike Veteran's Day, which is set aside to honor all veterans, Memorial Day specifically honors our fallen soldiers: those who gave their lives for their Country. And in many parts of the Country, Memorial Day also represents the unofficial beginning of summer.
In addition to the observance of the day itself, in 2000 U.S. Congress passed "The National Moment of Remembrance Act", which is intended to encourage Americans to pause on Memorial Day, wherever they are, at 3 p.m. local time, for a moment of silence in remembrance of all of our fallen heroes.
