MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER CONNIE HUDSON

Season's greetings! During this Christmas and holiday season we are all more keenly aware and appreciative of our many blessings and most treasured gifts - our families and friends. This is also the time of year that charitable organizations assist in providing resources and toys as Christmas gifts to under-privileged children and families. In Mobile County, the opportunities for citizens to help in meeting the needs of those less fortunate are provided through organizations such as the Salvation Army Holiday Programs (Angel Tree, Red Kettle, and Neediest Families), the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation, Dumas Wesley Community Center Annual Christmas Toy Store and Wilmer Hall Children's Home. Please click on these sites for information about how you can get involved in sharing your blessings and make the holidays brighter for those in our community who are less fortunate.

May your Christmas and holiday season be filled with happiness. Thank you for allowing me to serve you on the Mobile County Commission. It is truly a pleasure and a privilege.

Warmest Regards,

Connie

RCGOMOBILE COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER GRAND OPENING

The Mobile County Recycling Center is now open and accepting household recyclables including plastic, aluminum, paper, cardboard, glass, electronics and non-alkaline batteries. The 15,000 square-foot facility, located at 7450 Hitt Road, is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Goodwill Easter Seals operates and manages the facility at its own expense. "Our organization has been helping people find new homes for their unwanted items for a long, long time. In fact, we help Gulf Coast residents divert almost two million pounds of material from landfills every month. This recycling center is a new and exciting way for us to add to that," says Goodwill Easter Seals CEO Frank Harkins.

The cost of the project was funded by a $2.7 million federal grant, along with a $141,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. More than just a recycling center, the center provides a classroom and will feature an educational pavilion for school children to visit and learn about recycling and its impact on the environment.

For more information about the Mobile County Recycling Center call 459-8426 or Click Here to visit the MCRC website.

District 2 Education Fund Projects

ALLENTOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Allentown Elementary School located at 10330 Howells Ferry Road, received a $7,000 appropriation from Mobile County Commission District 2 Education Funds. The funds were used to help pay for awnings that lead to portable classrooms. According to Principal Ashtiny Roberts, "Allentown fifth graders and music classes are housed in the portables, and these coverings have been extremely beneficial to students on rainy days. The awnings provide shelter from inclement weather which helps to keep our students and their school supplies, such as textbooks, dry."

MOBILE AREA EDUCATION FOUNDATION FUND-A-S.T.A.R.

Commissioner Hudson provided a $10,000 education fund grant to the Mobile Area Education Foundation (MAEF) to impact teachers and students in District 2. Fund-A-S.T.A.R., (Students and Teachers Achieving Results), is a web-based program that provides an opportunity for the community to show tangible support to address specific needs in the classroom. Mobile County schoolteachers submit proposals online for ideas and needs of their students aligned to district goals. Individual donors browse through these proposals and select a proposal they want to fund or contribute to.

To ensure the accountability of the program, MAEF works closely with the  Mobile County Public School System to review all proposals. MAEF also provides fiscal responsibility that allows individuals and corporations to give private funds with confidence. Donors receive thank-you notes from students in the classroom they support, along with a receipt for their tax-deductible contribution.

Chandra Scott, Director of Strategic Outcomes states that, "MAEF knows and believes community support is critical to the success of our students. Funding from County Commissioner Connie Hudson provides grant awards to fund innovative programs and initiatives that positively impact both student and curriculum achievement, exemplifying our belief of what happens in the classroom matters most."

For more information on how you can participate in Fund-A-S.T.A.R., please contact the MAEF at 476-0002.
