MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER
CONNIE HUDSON
american-flag-banner.jpg
This morning I had the privilege and pleasure of attending the Mary G. Montgomery High School (MGM) Veterans Day Tribute. It was truly a wonderful experience! Principal James Gill and his talented faculty and staff certainly deserve highest praise for the guidance and tutelage provided to the students at MGM. The event included patriotic music performed by the MGM Band and Choir and speeches from the winners of the MGM Veterans Day Oratorical Speech Contest. The tribute concluded with an armed forces musical salute. Many thanks to all the men and women whose military service and sacrifice has ensured freedom in America for almost 240 years.

NEST of Mobile is a 501(c)(3) organization that serves the needs of at-risk families and children in Mobile County through partnerships with agencies, organizations and individuals. NEST's goal is to nurture children, equip parents, strengthen families, and transform communities through partnerships with agencies, organizations, and individuals in the community in order to meet some of these identified needs, to provide hope, and to empower families to rise above their current circumstances.

Pamela Savage, executive director and licensed social worker, comes to NEST with nearly 20 years experience in the field of social work and holds a master's degree in social work from The Ohio State University. Her experience spans adolescent and adult mental health counseling, child welfare, and most recently she served as satellite director of a local adoption agency. She meets with parents and children to help assess their needs. Working in partnership with area churches, faith-based communities, the Juvenile Court Collaborative, The Bridge, The Drug Education Council, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, AltaPointe, Mobile County Health Department and the Mobile County Public School System, and many more, NEST plays a vital role in assuring families are referred to and receive the appropriate help.

Family referrals may come to NEST from a variety of ways: from community partners, self-referral, juvenile court, schools, law enforcement, and churches. Families face many issues today that they simply do not know how to navigate without assistance. NEST hopes to help families succeed in managing their own lives by linking them to needed services and getting them on their way to a healthy level of functioning.

In addition to working with families, NEST will also work to develop new relationships with service providers in the community. NEST links families to providers that are equipped to meet their needs, but also to link volunteers to service providers and providers to providers in order to assist them in meeting the needs of the community. Services are provided by the executive director along with the assistance

of board members, an extensive pool of volunteers, and in collaboration with local partners.
