MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER
CONNIE HUDSON

Fall has now officially arrived in the Mobile Bay area and with it also...cooler temperatures, football mania, and of course, Bayfest, throughout the weekend. Fall also ushers in a number of other fun and enjoyable events to engage citizens within Mobile County. Please be sure to check the events calendar in this issue to check out what's happening!

One special event to mark on your calendar is the Grand Opening of the Mobile County Recycling Center to be held on Thursday, November 20 at 1:30 p.m.!

The Mobile County Recycling Center is nearly finished. Work and construction on the grounds and the building are in the process of completion. The county has contracted with Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast to manage and operate the center once it opens.

Items accepted at the facility will include paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, steel and aluminum cans, electronics (including computer equipment, televisions, stereos, cell phones, ink and toner cartridges) and clothing.

Please plan to join us for this long-awaited Grand Opening event!

The Bay Area Food Bank (BAFB), working through member organizations and special programs, provides nutritious food to meet the challenge of feeding people who are hungry as a result of personal crisis or disaster. The BAFB educates the public regarding domestic hunger, proper nutrition and related issues. Branches include the Main Branch located in Theodore, AL, the Panhandle Branch located in Milton, FL and the Mississippi Office located in Gulfport, MS. Together the branches distribute over 16 million pounds of food annually to the 24-county service area through the Food Bank's many programs including Child Nutrition, Community Garden, Mobile Pantry and Disaster Relief.

In addition to the Mobile Pantry Program, the Food Bank is also a disaster relief organization. It's facility is prepared for emergencies with back up generators, an industrial-sized kitchen, shower stations and emergency supplies such as food and water. Anytime a disaster strikes our area, truckloads of food and supplies are sent from Feeding America and other corporations. The Food Bank staff then works to get those supplies to the affected communities as quickly as possible, coordinating disaster efforts with the American Red Cross to ensure the most efficient and timely relief possible.

The Food Bank also operates the Backpack Program to meet the needs of chronically hungry children by providing them with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when other resources are not available. The Bay Area Food Bank's Backpack Program is located at schools that have a high incidence of children in

need. Each Backpack site distributes packs of food, which includes enough food for six meals and two snacks to participating children on Friday afternoons.

For more information or to sponsor a Backpack Program, contact Nutrition Programs Manager, Kim Lawkis at 653-1617, ext. 117 or

[email protected]. Groups are also welcome to pack bags at the food bank.

The Food Bank Community Garden Program provides fresh, nutritious produce to agency partners, educates the public about the benefits of growing their own produce and promotes environmental awareness in the community.

As part of the BAFB's Adopt a Plot program, 39 plots are for sale to anyone in the community for $15 each or $25 for two. In addition you are asked to donate 50% of what you grow to the food bank to help those in need.

For more information about the community garden programs or if you're interested in volunteering in a community garden, email [email protected].

financeMOBILE COUNTY FINANCIAL UPDATE
Through August we have completed 92% of the fiscal year. Our year-to-date revenue through August 2014 is $118,549,799.95. This represents 96.37% of budgeted FY2014 revenue. Receipt for many of our major revenues lags by one month. Most of the property tax revenue and business license revenue is collected in December and January. The positive variance in Miscellaneous Revenue is due to the sale of property and other one time revenues. The year-to-date expenditures through August are $112,508,073.93. This is 87.61% of total budgeted expenditures for the fiscal year. We expect expenditures to be below 92% on this report. The Health, Welfare and Education categories are primarily appropriations that are paid quarterly. Debt service is paid based on an amortization schedule. Through August both expenditures and revenues are within expected ranges.
