BACK-TO SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS

 

The Mobile County Health Department has scheduled immunization clinics for children age 4 and older to get needed vaccinations before school starts.

 

The first day for Mobile County public schools is Thursday, August 7. 

Alabama law requires children who attend day cares, Head Start programs and public or private schools to have an Immunization Certificate, also known as a blue card, before registration. According 

to Alabama's immunization schedule, Immunization Certificates expire when children reach 4 and 11 years of age. Parents are asked to bring a photo ID; the child's Social Security number; the child's immunization record; and the child's insurance card.

  • 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, August 2: Family Health at Mobile County Health Department, 251 North Bayou Street, Downtown Mobile
  • 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, August 8: Semmes Health Center, 3810 Wulff Road, Semmes

There will be no cost associated with the immunizations for Medicaid patients and the uninsured, according to a media release from the Mobile County Health Department. The Mobile County Health Department is  

also accepting walk-ins at the Downtown Immunization Clinic at 251 North Bayou Street 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 pm. Monday through Thursday.

Immunizations by appointment are also available at the Mobile County Health Department's eight satellite clinics.

PENGUIN PLANET AT THE GULF COAST EXPLOREUM

 
When: Now through January 2015
Where: Gulf Coast Exploreum, 65 Government Street, Downtown Mobile

This latest exhibit at the Exploreum features four African black-footed penguins. The endangered penguins will remain through early January 2015. Sponsored by PNC Bank, Penguin Planet will feature a unique tank created to emulate the penguins' natural habitat. The exhibit will also include educational displays with facts about the Exploreum's new guests, as well as other penguins from around the world. It will also shed light on how human actions impact the success of the species. In addition, special trainers will deliver hourly talks about the penguins, which will teach visitors about the penguins' markings, eating habits and more.

PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK PRESENTS "ANNIE: THE MUSICAL"

     

When: Now through Sunday, August 17 (7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2:30 p.m. Sundays) 

Where: Playhouse in the Park, 4851 Museum Drive, Mobile

 

"Annie!" is a captivating show for all ages based on the famous comic strip "Little Orphan Annie." You will delight in the adventurous life of the fiery young orphan girl who goes from rags to riches with her dog Sandy and her wealthy benefactor "Daddy" Warbucks.

BACK TO SCHOOL SALES TAX HOLIDAY

     

When: 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 1 through midnight Sunday, August 3

Alabama will hold its eighth annual sales tax holiday giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax, August 1 through August 3. Local sales and use tax may apply. Retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the Sales Tax Holiday.

150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF MOBILE BAY AND SIEGE OF FORT MORGAN

When: Noon Friday, August 1 through 2 p.m. Sunday, August 3

Where: Fort Morgan, 51 Alabama Highway 180, Gulf Shores

 

Join Fort Morgan and re-enactors from across the nation as they commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Battle of Mobile Bay and Siege of Fort Morgan. Saturday morning's events will depict the attack by the Union Navy upon the fort as they attempt to steam past the fort and into the bay. The afternoon witnesses the opening of the siege guns upon the fort. Saturday evening, the bombardment intensifies with artillery blazing away at the fort and concluding for the day with a grand fireworks display over the fort. There will also be period music and demonstrations throughout the day.

 

Cost: $10- single day ticket, ages 6 and older; $20- three day pass, ages 6 and older; $30- single day, family of four; $65- three day pass, family of four.

GULF COAST ETHNIC AND HERITAGE JAZZ FESTIVAL

   

When: 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, August 2

Where: The Temple, 351 St. Francis Street, Downtown Mobile 

 

This free event will include a Second Line Parade from Cathedral Square to the Temple featuring a "Best Decorated Umbrella" contest and music by Bay City Brass, Keep it Live and Jason Marsallis. Food and beverage vendors will be available in and outside the Temple during the event.

MOBILE COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS' LUNCH AND LEARN 

   

When: Noon to 1 p.m. Monday, August 4

Where: Jon Archer Agriculture Center, 1070 Schillinger Road North, Mobile 

 

This program will feature "From Garden to Kitchen-Making Pesto" presented by D.J. Johnson, Mobile County Master Gardener with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. This program is free and open to the public. Beverages are provided. Bring a lunch and bring a friend.

 

MOBILE COUNTY MASTER GARDENER MONTHLY MEETING

 

When: 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, August 7

Where: Jon Archer Agriculture Center, 1070 Schillinger Road North, Mobile

 

Join Presenters Marion Titlestad and Sarah Clark of Bay Gourmet Catering for this month's program featuring "Garden to Kitchen-Seasonal Appetizers". This program is free and open to the public.

2014 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

  

When: 5:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 5

Where: east entrance of Bel Air Mall

 

Mobile Police will once again host National Night Out, a free family fun event. The celebration is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness as well as generate support for and recruit participation in local anti-crime programs. Entertainment and information provided during the event will include Project Care for seniors, home safety demonstrations, a Mobile Police K-9 Unit demonstration, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) demonstration and information on how to start a neighborhood watch. Over 50 vendors will be present at the event and door prizes will be awarded during the evening. Masters of Ceremony will be WKRG's Mel Showers and Rose Ann Haven.

BELLINGRATH GARDENS AND HOME FOUNDER'S DAY: FEATURING FREE ADMISSION TO GARDENS!

Where: Bellingrath Gardens and Home, 12401 Bellingrath Gardens Road, Theodore

 

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 6, 1869, Walter D. Bellingrath was Mobile's first Coca-Cola bottler and the founder of Bellingrath Gardens and Home. In honor of Mr. Bellingrath's Birthday, admission to the Gardens will be free to all Mobile and Baldwin County residents! There will be an additional charge to tour the Bellingrath Museum Home.
